Messages and Mail Contextual Suggestions in iOS 27: Add an Event or Find a Photo With One Tap

iOS 27 puts one-tap actions inside your conversations. Apple’s iOS 27 page says “Messages and Mail offer suggestions to help you take quick actions based on context from your conversation,” naming two examples: add a calendar event, or search for a photo.

Two caveats sit alongside that sentence. Apple lists the Messages version as coming in a future software update rather than on day one, and Apple’s June briefing on services said Messages and Mail Suggestions are English only. The Mail version is also described as reaching into third-party apps, not just Apple’s own.

If the distinction holds, Mail users see the feature first and Messages users wait for a point release. Apple has not given a date for the Messages half.

What the two example actions do today

The calendar action lines up with another iOS 27 addition: Apple says Calendar can “add and edit events with just a description,” so a suggestion tapped from a thread has somewhere to land.

Photo search already works the way Apple describes. Apple Support’s current guide, which is the iOS 26 version, says you tap Search in Photos and describe what you are looking for, using “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt” as its own example. Those steps come from the shipping guide and may shift once iOS 27 arrives on September 14.

That same support page also carries the requirement list for Apple Intelligence in Photos: iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus iPads with A17 Pro or M1 and later and Macs with M1 or later. It notes the features are not available for devices purchased in mainland China or for accounts set to that region.

What you need, and what will not appear

An Apple Intelligence iPhone is the gate. Apple’s iOS 27 page lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or later, which covers the new iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max and the iPhone Duo shipping in October. Every iPhone 11 and later gets iOS 27, without these suggestions.

Language is the second gate, and it is tighter than the rest of Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence supports 16 languages according to Apple’s iOS 27 page, but Apple’s services release puts Messages and Mail Suggestions, Call Context and intelligent file naming in English only.

Region matters too. Apple’s pages say Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, and Apple’s June release said the new Apple Intelligence features are on hold in China pending regulatory requirements. Apple has not published a separate region list for the suggestions themselves.

What Apple has not said

  • A date for the Messages version, beyond “a future software update.”
  • Which third-party apps Mail can hand an action to, or how developers opt in.
  • Whether the suggestions appear as a banner, a row above the keyboard, or inside the share sheet.
  • Whether they can be switched off per app or per conversation.
  • Whether the context is read entirely on-device or partly through Private Cloud Compute.
  • Any step-by-step support guide: Apple Support’s published instructions are still the iOS 26 ones, so paths and labels may change on September 14.

iOS 27 is a free update on Monday, September 14, for iPhone 11 and later, with Apple Intelligence limited to iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or newer. Our iOS 27 release day guide tracks the full feature list, and the Surprise and shine recap covers the hardware Apple announced with it.
