iOS 27 arrives on Monday, September 14 as a free update for every iPhone from the iPhone 11 up, and the weekend in front of it is busier than usual, because iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Series 12 and AirPods 5 pre-orders all open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12. The preparation that makes Monday uneventful takes about twenty minutes, and most of it is better done before Saturday.
Apple’s iOS 27 page lists compatibility as iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), a far wider list than the iPhones that get Apple Intelligence. Start with the device list, because the shorthand people repeat is wrong. iOS 27 runs on the iPhone 11 family, the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 families, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, and the iPhone SE from the second generation onward. That is iPhone 11 and later, not iPhone 12 and later, so a 2019 handset still qualifies.
One dependency is worth spotting now: Apple lists Apple Watch Series 12 as requiring an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later, so a watch in your Saturday basket makes the update compulsory.
Saturday belongs to pre-orders, not to the update
iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, which is 1 p.m. BST in the United Kingdom and 5:30 p.m. IST in India. Availability is Friday, September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions, with 20 more on Friday, September 25. Apple’s Store pages list $1,199 for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max.

If a trade-in is part of the plan, Apple’s Trade In page says the estimate is valid for 14 days after you receive the new device, and its preparation instructions are to back up, turn off Find My and sign out. That is a separate job from the backup you are doing for iOS 27.
Sunday: back up, then set your expectations
Run the backup on Sunday and check that it reports a completed date and time rather than a progress bar. Apple Support’s current step lists for backing up an iPhone are written against iOS 26, the selector at the top of the guide says so, and the menu paths may shift once iOS 27 ships on Monday.
Then adjust what you expect to find. Siri AI arrives as a beta in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October. Apple says Siri AI will not be initially available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, although Mac and Vision Pro do get it there when set to a supported language.
Apple Intelligence itself covers 16 languages: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese. Simplified and Traditional Chinese are listed separately, which is why the total is 16 rather than 15. Apple also says server-backed features carry daily usage limits, with expanded access available for a fee in the future.
Monday: what you actually get, and what comes later
Apple’s own performance figures are the strongest argument for updating an older iPhone. It claims app launches up to 30 percent faster, measured on an iPhone 11 Pro Max against iOS 26.4.2 between April and May 2026; new photos loading up to 70 percent faster on an iPhone 15 with a 50,000-asset library; and AirDrop transfers up to 80 percent faster on an iPhone 16 Plus moving a 30MB photo with no Wi-Fi network.
Liquid Glass gains a slider in Settings that runs from ultraclear to fully tinted, and app icons are sharper. Photos adds Spatial Reframing, an Extend tool and a Clean Up that removes larger objects. Safari groups tabs into topics and can watch a page for a price change or a restock. Health adds perimenopause notifications in Cycle Tracking, and AirPods get a Custom EQ.
Two things will not be there. Apple labels Messages Suggestions and the Passwords tool that flags and updates weak passwords as coming in a future software update, and the new parental controls need the Screen Time update inside iOS 27.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a release time for iOS 27, a download size, an install duration, or a supported route back to iOS 26 once you have updated. It has not published a tvOS 27 release date either, although that release candidate went to developers on September 9 alongside the rest. Third-party app compatibility is not published in advance either, so a work app you depend on is worth checking with its developer.
