If you are carrying an iPhone 16 Pro, the straight answer is that the iPhone 18 Pro is a genuine upgrade in three places, a sideways move in a fourth, and a poor use of money in every other respect. Apple prices it at $1,199 for 256GB and its trade-in page currently estimates up to $510 for an iPhone 16 Pro, so the best case is about $689 plus tax to move across two generations.
It is closer than the spec sheet suggests, because nothing in this year’s software is gated behind the new phone. Apple’s iOS 27 page lists full Apple Intelligence support on iPhone 16 and later, and iOS 27 arrives on September 14. Everything you pay for here is physical.

What the upgrade actually costs

That is our arithmetic on Apple’s published price and Apple’s published trade-in estimate. The $510 is a ceiling for a clean, fully working handset, not a quote: Apple’s trade-in page spans $35 to $885 across the whole iPhone line, and cracked glass, a tired battery or an unresolved Find My lock moves your number down or out of the programme. Budget one more line, too, because Apple ships the phone with a cable and no power adapter, and the 15-minute half charge is quoted with a 60W adapter sold separately.
The three changes you will actually notice
- Battery. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro at up to 36 hours of video playback and 33 hours of streamed video, against 27 and 22 hours for the iPhone 16 Pro. Nine hours is the largest gap in the table.
- Charging. The 16 Pro reaches 50 percent in about 30 minutes. The 18 Pro does it in about 15 minutes with a 60W adapter, or 30 minutes on a 35W adapter over MagSafe. Our breakdown of Apple’s charging claims has the rest.
- The main camera. A fixed f/1.78 lens becomes a variable one with four stops from f/1.48 to f/4.0, with manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app. The variable aperture explainer covers what each stop is for.
Be careful with the chip numbers. Apple’s A20 Pro claims, including a GPU up to 40 percent faster and 50 percent more memory bandwidth, are measured against last year’s A19 Pro, not the A18 Pro in your phone. Apple has published no A18 Pro to A20 Pro figure, so the honest position is that the gap is wider than 40 percent and nobody outside Apple has measured it.
The one thing you give up: 120 mm
Your iPhone 16 Pro has a 12MP tetraprism telephoto at 120 mm, a 5x lens. The iPhone 18 Pro’s dedicated telephoto is shorter, at 100 mm, but it is a 48MP sensor, and Apple lists a 12MP optical-quality 8x frame at 200 mm cropped from it.
So reach cuts both ways. You lose a native 120 mm frame and gain a longer 200 mm one that is a crop, not a lens. Whether that crop beats the 16 Pro’s native 120 mm needs side-by-side shooting, and no reviewer has had both phones yet.
Who should keep the iPhone 16 Pro
Stay put if you charge overnight, rarely finish a day under 30 percent, shoot mostly at 1x and 2x, and your glass and battery are still good. None of the three real gains will change your day, and $689 is a lot for a phone that does what yours does.
Upgrade if you bought the 128GB model and live at the storage ceiling, since the 18 Pro starts at 256GB; if you regularly run flat away from a charger; or if manual aperture and shutter control is something you would use rather than admire. What Apple has not said
Apple has published no benchmark, no photo comparison and no battery test against the iPhone 16 Pro, and no reviewer has used the new phone. Every figure above is Apple’s own rating or our arithmetic on Apple’s published prices. Apple also publishes no trade-in figure per condition grade, so treat $510 as the top of a range you will not know until Apple inspects the handset.
Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, with the phone in stores on Friday, September 18. iOS 27 lands on Monday, September 14, so a 16 Pro owner can install this year’s software first and see how much of the upgrade was really the hardware.
