The first storage step on iPhone 18 Pro costs $200, the difference between $1,199 for 256GB and $1,399 for 512GB on Apple’s US Store page. Spread across three years of owning the phone that is $5.56 a month, and that is the number any cloud plan has to beat before it is the cheaper way to buy the same headroom. The second step works out at $11.11 a month and the third at $16.67. All three are our arithmetic on Apple’s prices over 36 months.
We are not quoting iCloud+ tier prices in this piece. They are not on the Apple Store and tech specs pages we sourced for this launch, and we do not publish figures we have not checked against Apple. Our arithmetic, dividing Apple’s published price differences by the number of months you expect to keep the phone. The assumption is simply how long you keep it: at two years the bar a subscription has to clear is higher, at four years it is lower. The same steps apply to iPhone 18 Pro Max, which runs $1,299, $1,499, $1,899 and $2,499, so this table works for either size of iPhone 18 Pro.

Apple already publishes the monthly version in the UK
Apple’s UK Store lists one monthly figure per tier over 30 months at 0 percent APR. Subtract the base tier and Apple has effectively done this comparison for you in public.

Apple’s monthly figures, our subtraction. The UK plan runs 30 instalments rather than the 36 months used above, so the same £200, £600 and £1,200 are spread over a shorter period. That is the whole trick of this comparison: the one-off price is fixed, the monthly number depends entirely on the period you divide it by.
The two things you are buying are not the same thing
- Local storage is capture space. A cloud plan gives the camera nowhere to write a 4K120 clip, and the phone still needs room before anything can sync.
- The tier is fixed when the phone is built. Apple’s tech specs list four capacities and no expansion; USB-C with USB 3 at up to 10 Gb/s is the only route to more space afterwards, and the drive is a separate purchase.
- A subscription follows you. It covers the next iPhone, an iPad and a Mac, while the $200 you spend on 512GB stays with this one phone for its life.
- A subscription stops when you stop paying. Storage in the phone is part of what the phone is worth later: Apple’s newsroom quotes an Apple Trade In range of $175 to $885 for an iPhone 13 or later, though it does not publish how much of that spread is capacity.
iCloud+ is not only gigabytes
Apple’s own June 8 note on Apple Intelligence says features that lean on server models carry daily limits, and that increased access comes with most iCloud+ plans, which also include Apple Intelligence support for compatible Home cameras. In iOS 27, which arrives on September 14, Apple lists the new Home camera features, including described and searchable clips and 4K recording, as needing a home hub, iCloud+ and an Apple Intelligence device.
None of that is storage, and none of it can be bought with a larger phone. If you want those features, the subscription is not competing with the storage step at all, and the honest way to read the table above is as the price of the gigabytes only.
What has not been confirmed
We have not verified current iCloud+ tier prices against an Apple page for this article, so we have published the break-even instead of a comparison table with a number in it we cannot stand behind. Apple has also not published how much of each capacity iOS 27 occupies, per-model trade-in values, or whether storage prices change after launch. Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, with phones in stores on Friday, September 18 in more than 65 countries and 20 more on September 25. The subscription can be started, stopped or changed at any point after that. The tier cannot.
