Apple has published a great deal about how iPhone Duo is built and one thing it has not published at all: how many times the hinge is rated to open and close. For a $1,999 phone whose defining part is a hinge, that absence is the most important line in the specification.
What Apple does give you is IP68 to 6 meters for 30 minutes, a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer front, Ceramic Shield on the back, and a hinge Apple says contains more than 100 components. That is a serious answer to durability. It is not the same as a fold count.

What Apple engineered into the hinge
The hinge is where a folding phone lives or dies, and Apple has been unusually specific about it. The cover is 3D-printed from 100 percent recycled titanium, the frame around it is Grade 5 titanium, and the mechanism runs to more than 100 parts.

The detail that tells you the most is the custom adhesives for flex relief. Flex relief means the design assumes the display stack will move as it folds, and the bonding is tuned to let it move rather than to hold it rigid. Apple describes the same idea on the display side, where optically clear adhesives let the layers glide.
That is the opposite of pretending the panel is a solid sheet. It is a stack designed around bending, which is the right approach and still not a warranty of longevity.
What IP68 covers on a phone that opens
Apple rates iPhone Duo at IP68 with a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, the same rating it gives the iPhone 18 Pro. Matching the rating on a device with a moving seam is the genuinely surprising engineering claim of the launch.
Two things are worth being clear about. IP68 is a laboratory rating measured under controlled conditions, and Apple has not said whether it was tested with the phone open, closed, or both. Nor has Apple published how the rating behaves after months of folding.
Dust is the quieter risk on a fold, and the IP6X half of that rating is the part that speaks to it. Apple has published the rating and nothing beyond it.
The number Apple did not print
Folding phone buyers ask one question above all others: how many folds. Apple has not answered it, has not published a drop test result, and has not published a crease measurement.
We are not going to fill that gap with an estimate. Any figure you see attributed to iPhone Duo today did not come from Apple, and a fold count is precisely the kind of number that cannot be inferred from titanium grades and component counts.
The practical consequence is simple. Until Apple publishes a rating or until units have been in pockets for months, the durability case for this phone rests on materials and on Apple choosing to put its name on a folding iPhone at all.
What this means if you are buying on October 16
- Treat the IP68 rating as a splash and rain rating, as you would on any iPhone, rather than as permission to swim with it.
- The outer front is Ceramic Shield 2 and the back is Ceramic Shield. The inner display is polymer over glass, which is a softer surface than either.
- Apple sells an iPhone Duo Case at $79 and a Folio with kickstand at $129, and the Folio is the only one of the two that covers the inner display when shut.
- Nothing Apple has published addresses hinge repair or inner display replacement pricing.
- Apple Pencil works on both displays, with support arriving later in 2026, which is another surface contact to think about on the inner panel.
What Apple has not said
No hinge cycle rating, no drop test data, no crease depth, no statement on how IP68 holds up over time, no repair pricing for the folding display, and no comment on whether the inner display can be replaced separately from the hinge.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT and the phone goes on sale Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, with 28 more on Friday, October 30. Real durability evidence starts arriving after that, not before.
