Is the Foldable iPhone Duo Water Resistant? Here’s Its Official IP Rating

Yes, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is water resistant. The newly announced iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance, putting its official protection rating in line with Apple’s regular flagship iPhones.

Apple says the iPhone Duo survived laboratory testing at a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under IEC standard 60529. That is especially important for a foldable phone because its hinge, flexible display, and additional moving components create more potential entry points for water and fine particles.

Apple introduced the iPhone Duo during its September 2026 launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series. You can also read our broader iPhone 18 Pro and foldable iPhone roundup and our iPhone Duo FAQ covering its main specifications and release details.

What does the iPhone Duo IP68 rating mean?

ProtectioniPhone Duo ratingWhat it means
DustIP6XComplete protection against dust intrusion
WaterIPX8Protection during extended immersion under specified conditions
Apple testUp to 6 metersUp to 30 minutes in controlled laboratory testing

The first digit in IP68 refers to protection from solid particles. A rating of 6 means the enclosure is considered dust-tight, which matters because dust entering a folding hinge can interfere with moving components over time.

The second digit covers water resistance. Apple specifies protection at depths of up to 6 meters for 30 minutes, although the IPX8 standard itself does not guarantee every device will survive every real-world immersion scenario.

How Apple protects the foldable design

Apple uses several structural features to improve the iPhone Duo’s durability:

  • A Grade 5 titanium enclosure
  • A precision hinge built from more than 100 components
  • A 3D-printed hinge cover
  • Internal support ribs for additional stiffness
  • Ceramic fiber inserts around antenna sections
  • Ceramic Shield 2 protecting the outer display
  • A scratch-resistant coating and reinforced polymer layer over the folding display
  • High-strength glass and a titanium support plate beneath the inner screen

The hinge also supports the center of the flexible display when the phone opens flat, while an integrated magnet system keeps the device securely closed.

Is the iPhone Duo waterproof?

No phone should be treated as waterproof. Apple specifically warns that splash, water, and dust resistance can decrease through normal wear, so repeated exposure to water, impacts, repairs, or aging seals can reduce protection.

Apple also says users should not charge the iPhone Duo while it is wet, and liquid damage remains outside Apple’s standard warranty coverage.

So, the iPhone Duo offers unusually strong water and dust protection for a foldable device, with an official IP68 rating and testing at up to 6 meters for 30 minutes. Its folding design still deserves more care around water than the specification alone might suggest, particularly as the hinge and seals accumulate wear over time.
