Apple published a support document on September 9 that gives a name to a set of Apple Intelligence features on its two newest watches, and it carries a requirement that is easy to miss. Two of the four features in the category need an iPhone 16 or newer, and the other two do not.
The document is numbered 148354 and titled “About Audio Intelligence features on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.” It is the only place Apple has set out what Audio Intelligence covers, and it splits the category into two hardware tiers rather than one.

What Apple means by Audio Intelligence
Apple defines the category in a single sentence in the document: “A brand-new class of Apple Intelligence features that use the microphones of Apple Watch, the power of Apple silicon, and on-device and cloud-based AI models to help you detect sounds, identify music, and stay present and engaged, all while protecting your privacy at every step.”

Four features sit under that heading: Sound Recognition, Music Recognition with Shazam, Live Rewind and Siri Recap. All four require either the Apple Watch Series 12 or the Apple Watch Ultra 4, the two models Apple announced on September 9 and the two that share the new S11 chip.
The name did not get meaningful time on stage. It exists, as a defined product category, in this support document and effectively nowhere else on Apple’s site.
The iPhone requirement splits the category in two
Every one of the four features needs a paired iPhone, but not the same iPhone. Apple lists a floor of iPhone 11 for two of them and a floor of iPhone 16 for the other two.

That iPhone 16 floor is stricter than Apple Intelligence’s own floor. Apple’s iOS 27 page lists full Apple Intelligence support on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or later. Live Rewind and Siri Recap sit above that line, which means an iPhone 15 Pro owner who buys a Series 12 gets two of the four Audio Intelligence features rather than all four.
It is also stricter than the watch. Both Series 12 and Ultra 4 use the same S11 chip with a 4-core Neural Engine and 64GB of storage, so the gating here is happening on the phone, not on the wrist.
What works now and what is still in beta
Apple lists Sound Recognition and Music Recognition with Shazam as available now. Live Rewind and Siri Recap, the two features with the higher iPhone requirement, launch in beta later in 2026, and Apple gives no month.
watchOS 27 arrives as a free update on Monday, September 14, the same day iOS 27 ships. Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 at $799, both with pre-orders that opened on September 9 and availability in stores from Friday, September 18.
English only, the US first, and not in the EU
The document says Audio Intelligence is English only, “with additional languages planned for future releases,” and that the United States comes first. No other country is named and no rollout schedule is given.
It also repeats Apple’s Siri AI line in full: “Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS.” Because that sentence covers watchOS, Siri Recap falls inside the exclusion for EU users, which is worth knowing before you buy a watch for it.
What Apple has not said
- No date for the Live Rewind and Siri Recap beta beyond “later in 2026.”
- No reason for the iPhone 16 floor, and no statement on whether iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max are added later.
- No list of the additional languages, and no month for them.
- No countries beyond the United States for the initial release.
- No tech-spec support document for Series 12 or Ultra 4 yet. Apple’s iPhone support index likewise still lists nothing newer than the iPhone 17 family.
watchOS 27 lands on September 14 and both watches reach stores on September 18. On day one, Sound Recognition and Music Recognition are the Audio Intelligence features most buyers will actually be able to use. Live Rewind and Siri Recap need the newer iPhone and a beta that Apple has dated only as later this year, and that is the detail to check before you spend $399 or $799 on the strength of them.
