The list of features Apple says need both a Mac running macOS 27 Golden Gate and an iPhone 18 Pro is shorter than the pairing suggests. The clearest one is a Siri conversation that begins on the Mac and finishes on the phone, because Apple syncs that history through iCloud.
Most of what Apple announced on September 9 is described platform by platform rather than as a Continuity feature. The software lands first, on Monday, September 14, and the phone reaches stores on Friday, September 18, so the useful question this week is which of the two devices each feature actually needs.

What Apple says spans both devices
- The Siri app. Apple’s wording is that iCloud privately syncs conversational history across a user’s products, so a chat started on Mac continues on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro.
- Ask to Browse and the rest of the new child safety controls, which Apple says work across iPhone, iPad and Mac in Safari once the Screen Time update in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 is installed.
- iCloud Shared Albums, rebuilt for full resolution originals, more file types, emoji reactions, per album activity feeds and temporary albums, with web access for Android and Windows.
- The Photos editing tools. Spatial Reframing, the Extend tool and the enhanced Clean Up are on both lists, so a photo shot on the phone can be finished on either screen.
- Call Context, which surfaces reservation codes and confirmation numbers during a call, appears on the iOS and macOS feature lists alike, in English only.
- AirDrop, which Apple says is faster on both platforms.
Everything else is best read as a single device feature that happens to exist on the other platform in a different form.

The variable aperture camera is the sharpest example of a phone only feature. Apple describes manual aperture and shutter controls, Smart Focus and the new Photographic Styles as iPhone 18 Pro capabilities, and says nothing about a Mac counterpart for any of them.
Where the pairing breaks down: the hardware tiers
Apple keeps a smaller list for what it calls its advanced on-device model, which powers Siri voice customization and the improved Dictation. On the phone side the iPhone 18 Pro is on it, thanks to the A20 Pro. On the Mac side the requirement is M3 or later with at least 12GB of unified memory.
So the common pairing of a brand new iPhone 18 Pro and a three or four year old MacBook Air produces a split: voice customization and the better Dictation model on the phone, neither on the laptop, even though the Mac installs Golden Gate and runs Siri AI perfectly well. The same applies in reverse to anyone holding an iPhone that iOS 27 supports but Apple Intelligence does not.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published what a Mac does with an Apple Reference Image captured on an iPhone 18 Pro, only that the iPhone stores an untouched original with verification metadata alongside the edits. It has not published a figure for AirDrop speed between a Mac and an iPhone, since the up to 80 percent claim comes from an iPhone test with a 30MB photo. iPhone Handoff is listed as an iOS 27 feature and described as carrier dependent, with no Mac detail attached. And Apple has not said what the EU rule means for a synced Siri history shared between a Mac that has the assistant and an iPhone that does not. None of it came up on stage, as our event recap notes.
The order of events is fixed. Update the Mac on Monday, September 14, then set up the phone when it arrives on Friday, September 18, and sign both into the same Apple Account if the Siri app history is the part you want.
