Reddit User Recreates iPhone Duo Fold Animation on Galaxy Z Fold 8

A Reddit user has recreated one of the iPhone Duo’s smooth folding animations on a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, showing that Samsung’s hardware can already support a similar transition with the right software.

Apple introduced the iPhone Duo on September 9 with iOS 27 software designed specifically for its folding hardware. Apple says content reacts as the phone folds and smoothly moves between the outer 5.4-inch display and the 7.6-inch inner screen.

After seeing the animation, a Reddit user experimented with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and discovered that its hinge sensor provides accurate information about the phone’s folding angle. The user then connected those hinge values to a custom transition running across both screens.

The recreated animation received thousands of upvotes, with several Fold 8 owners asking how it worked and whether Samsung could add something similar through a future software update.

Here is how the proof of concept works:

  • A custom Android app reads the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s hinge-angle sensor.
  • Screenshots of the outer and inner home screens act as the visual layers.
  • An AGSL shader changes the animation according to the hinge position.
  • Android’s Presentation API helps display the effect across both screens.

It is still only a demonstration

The creator clarified that the animation does not modify Samsung’s actual System UI. Third-party Android apps do not have the privileged system access required to control live interface layers in this way, so the current version uses screenshots to simulate the effect.

Still, the experiment suggests Samsung already has the necessary hinge hardware to build a comparable transition directly into One UI if it decides to add one.
