Step by step: pairing with the family option
- Press and hold the side button on the watch until the Apple logo appears.
- Put the watch on the wearer’s wrist.
- Hold your unlocked iPhone near the watch and wait for the setup prompt.
- Choose “Set Up for a Family Member.” This is the fork in Apple’s flow; “Set Up for Myself” pairs the watch to your own account.
- Center the watch in the iPhone viewfinder inside the Apple Watch app.
- If the camera does not pick it up, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually and follow the prompts.
- Choose to set up as new or restore from a backup.

Which size and band for a smaller wrist
Apple sells Series 12 in two sizes, and the band ranges tell you which fits. The 42mm bands cover wrists from 130 to 200 mm; the 46mm bands cover 140 to 245 mm. Apple’s Store page notes that the Sport Band comes with one band size in the box.

For bands, Apple’s new Sport Band colors are olive, burgundy, wildflower blue and pale succulent, and the Sport Loop adds chambray blue, magenta, burgundy plaid and light umber plaid. Band prices are not in Apple’s release. Apple did not announce a new Apple Watch SE at the event, and the SE 3 went unavailable before the event, so Series 12 aluminum is the cheapest new watch Apple has published a price for.

The practical reading is that a watch set up for a child will miss the Apple Intelligence tier regardless of hardware, because Apple ties those features to a paired Apple Intelligence iPhone and sets an age floor for Siri AI.
If it does not work
- Check the iPhone. Series 12 needs iPhone 11 or later on iOS 27. An older iPhone will not show the setup prompt.
- Check Bluetooth and the network. Apple lists both as prerequisites for pairing.
- Use manual pairing. If the viewfinder step fails, Apple’s step six is Pair Apple Watch Manually.
- Check the passcode. Setup will not finish without one, and Apple Pay depends on it.
- Keep the devices together. Apple’s final step is to leave the iPhone and watch close while syncing completes.
