AirPods 5 cost $129, or $149 with the Wireless Charging Case, and Apple’s two headline claims against AirPods 4 are up to 50 percent more noise removed and one more hour of listening with Active Noise Cancellation on. Those two numbers are the whole upgrade case as Apple has stated it.
Apple’s press release says nothing else about AirPods 4, so the rest of the AirPods 5 feature list cannot be framed as an improvement over a specific AirPods 4 capability without going beyond what Apple has published.

Apple credits the noise cancellation gain to a new multiport acoustic architecture inspired by AirPods Pro 3 and to improved computational audio. Apple has not published a decibel figure or described how the 50 percent measurement was taken.
Features Apple did not compare with AirPods 4
These arrive on AirPods 5, but Apple has not said which of them AirPods 4 lacked, so treat them as a feature list rather than a list of upgrades:

The honest answer for AirPods 4 owners
If you bought AirPods 4 with ANC for the noise cancellation and it has not been enough, AirPods 5 are the direct answer: Apple’s up-to-50-percent claim is the largest single change in the release. The extra hour of ANC listening is the second reason.
If you own the AirPods 4 model without ANC, the jump is larger, because AirPods 5 add noise cancellation at every price point. Apple has not stated what that base AirPods 4 model offered, so we are not putting numbers on that gap.
If your AirPods 4 with ANC are working and the noise cancellation is adequate, nothing in Apple’s release makes a strong case to spend $129 or $149 today. Apple has not announced trade-in values or promotions for the launch.
