Four of the features Apple showed on September 9 never reach an older Apple Watch, no matter which version of watchOS it runs. Apple’s own support document limits Sound Recognition, Music Recognition with Shazam, Live Rewind and Siri Recap to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, the two models built around the S11 chip.
The reason is that these are not software features bolted onto watchOS 27. They depend on new sensors, on an always-on audio path, and on a hardware-isolated part of the chip that Apple calls the Secure Exclave.

Audio Intelligence is the clearest line Apple has drawn
Apple describes Audio Intelligence as a new class of Apple Intelligence features that use the microphones of Apple Watch and on-device and cloud models to detect sounds, identify music and, in Apple’s words, help you stay present and engaged.

Sound Recognition alerts you to sirens, alarms, doorbells and a baby crying. Music Recognition uses Shazam. Live Rewind returns the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as text. Siri Recap summarizes a conversation. Apple’s support document requires an Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4 for all four.
The Secure Exclave, and why the audio stays put
Apple describes the Secure Exclave as a hardware-isolated compartment inside the S11 used for on-device audio processing, with immediate deletion afterwards. A watch that listens continuously for a doorbell or the last 15 seconds of speech has to hold that audio somewhere, and Apple’s answer is a part of the chip that older watches do not have.
That is the substance behind the hardware line. It is not a marketing decision that could be reversed in a point release, because the older S10 in Series 11, Ultra 3 and SE 3 has no equivalent compartment.
The Health Sensing System is sensors, not code
The second gated group is measurement. Series 12 and Ultra 4 carry new optical and electrical heart sensors with larger, power-efficient green LEDs. Apple says that produces background heart rate readings 60 times more often than Series 11 and Ultra 3, and heart rate variability readings 24 times more often.
In practice that is heart rate every five seconds all day and HRV as often as every five minutes, split into Recovery HRV for daily stress and recovery and an overall HRV figure, plus a new daytime vitals view. Apple also cites a study of more than 1,000 participants run in July and August 2026 in claiming the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable.

The one feature Apple has not pinned to a model
Readiness, the daily 0 to 10 score built from recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep, was introduced with the new watches. But Apple’s health press release lists device requirements of Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later and SE 3, which is a wider group. Apple has not published a per-feature breakdown, so whether a Series 10 gets a Readiness score on Monday is genuinely unclear.
The same applies to the new Steps complication and Apple’s step-accuracy claim, both announced as part of the Series 12 story without a statement about older models.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a launch date for Live Rewind and Siri Recap beyond beta later in 2026, has not listed the languages that follow English, and has not said whether any Audio Intelligence feature will reach older hardware. It has also not published an About watchOS 27 Updates support document.
