watchOS 27 adds two navigation changes Apple describes on its watchOS page: a tap gesture, a single tap of your index finger and thumb, that selects Smart Stack widgets one-handed, and a dynamic app grid that automatically suggests your frequently and recently used apps. Both arrive with the free update on Monday, September 14, the same day as iOS 27, on Apple Watch Series 9 and later, SE 3 and Ultra 2 and later.
Neither feature needs setup according to Apple’s description. The steps below follow Apple’s published description of watchOS 27 and may differ slightly once the software ships.

- Update to watchOS 27 on September 14 through the Watch app on your iPhone, or directly on the watch.
- Raise your wrist so the display is on and the watch face is showing.
- Open the Smart Stack, the scrolling set of widgets that sits over the watch face.
- Tap your index finger and thumb together once. Apple says this single tap selects the widget, so you can act on it without touching the screen with your other hand.
- Repeat the tap as you move through the stack to select other widgets.
Apple describes the gesture only in the context of the Smart Stack. It has not published a list of other places the tap works, so treat it as a Smart Stack control until Apple says otherwise.
How the dynamic app grid works
The app grid in watchOS 27 rearranges itself. Apple says it auto-suggests frequently and recently used apps, and that the new Siri app is featured in it. There is no configuration step in Apple’s description; the suggestions change as your usage changes.
- After updating, open your apps from the watch face as you do today.
- Look for the suggested apps, which Apple says are the ones you use most often or used most recently.
- Look for the Siri app, which Apple says is featured in the grid. It brings all your Siri AI conversations together, supports pinning, and continues conversations across devices.
- Keep using the watch normally. The grid updates on its own as your habits change.
The Siri app matters here because Siri AI on the watch is new in watchOS 27, powered by Apple Intelligence, with personal context and the ability to take action across apps. It launches in English first, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in October, and Apple says some features are regionally limited. Siri AI is not available to users under 13. Smart Stack suggestions that pair with the gesture
The tap gesture is more useful because the Smart Stack itself changes in watchOS 27. Apple says it now offers contextual widget suggestions, and names birthdays, a parked car and transit cards as examples. There is also a new Siri Modular watch face, and Apple mentions a Liquid Glass display design and a Call Context feature that surfaces relevant information during business calls.
On Ultra 4 and Series 12 specifically, the S11 chip adds Live Rewind, Siri Recap and, later in 2026, Sound Recognition, but the tap gesture and app grid are watchOS features and Apple does not restrict them to the new watches.
If it does not work
- Check the watch model. Apple’s compatibility list is SE 3, Series 9 through 12 and Ultra 2 through 4. Series 8 and earlier, SE 2 and the original Ultra are not listed.
- Check the iPhone. watchOS 27 needs an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, on iOS 27, which also ships September 14.
- Confirm the update installed. Both features are part of watchOS 27 and are not available on watchOS 26.
- Remember the timing. Apple has not stated a release time, and Apple usually ships updates around 10 a.m. Pacific.
What Apple has not said
- Whether the tap gesture can be turned off, or where its setting lives.
- Whether the tap gesture works anywhere outside the Smart Stack.
- Whether the dynamic app grid can be switched back to a fixed layout.
- Which of the eight supported watches, if any, miss either feature.
