If calls are the reason you are buying AirPods, buy AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case at $149. It has the same microphone array and the same Voice Isolation as the $129 model, plus an extra hour of playback, a case speaker so you can find it, and a volume swipe you can reach mid-call without your phone. Step up to AirPods Pro 3 at $249 only if your calls are long or noisy.
One caveat frames everything below. Apple publishes no talk time for any AirPods model on the spec pages we read, so nobody can tell you how many hours of calling a set delivers. What Apple does publish is the microphone hardware, the listening battery, and the call features by model.

The number Apple does not publish
Talk time used to be the headline figure for a headset, and it is absent here. Apple’s AirPods spec pages list listening hours with noise cancelling on and off, hours with the case, and a five-minute quick charge worth around an hour, and they do not list a call figure for AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2. That is a published gap rather than a small one, and a buying decision for calls has to rest on the listening ratings and the hardware instead.

Use the listening figures as the floor of what you are buying, not as a promise about calls. On that basis the ladder is four hours, five hours, eight hours and 20 hours as you move up the four prices, with 20, 22 and 24 hours from the earbud cases and no case battery at all on the over-ear set.
Why the $149 AirPods 5 is the pick
Both AirPods 5 models carry the same sensor list: dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, an optical in-ear sensor, a motion-detecting accelerometer, a speech-detecting accelerometer and a force sensor. Apple lists Voice Isolation and Conversation Awareness on both, and studio-quality audio recording, which is the same microphone path a call uses. Both are IP57 and both run on Bluetooth 5.3.
The $20 premium earns its place for a caller specifically. The $149 model adds a force sensor with volume swipe, a case that charges over Qi and an Apple Watch charger as well as USB-C, a speaker in the case so Find My can make it chirp, and one more hour of playback: five hours with noise cancelling on and 22 hours with the case, against four and 20 on the $129 version.
The catch is what the open-ear shape does not do. Apple’s noise cancellation claim for AirPods 5 is up to 1.5 times the previous generation and the industry’s best in an open-ear design, which is a qualified claim, and neither model ships with ear tips or a USB-C cable. Apple also publishes no decibel figure, so how much room noise reaches your own ears on a call is not a number you can look up.
When AirPods Pro 3 at $249 is worth it
Two published lines justify the extra $100 for a heavy caller. The first is battery: up to eight hours with noise cancelling on and 24 hours with the case, double the $129 model’s listening rating. The second is Automatic Conversation Boost, which sits alongside the Hearing Test, the Hearing Aid feature Apple describes as FDA-authorized and Hearing Protection, none of which appear on AirPods 5. Transparency with the Hearing Aid feature is rated up to 10 hours.
The catches are fit and bulk. Pro 3 seals the ear with one of five silicone tip sizes, the buds are 5.55 g against 4.3 g and the case is 43.99 g against 32.3 g, and Apple still does not publish a talk-time figure for it. For AirPods Max 2 at $549, Apple’s September 9 announcements list no call-specific features at all, so we are not recommending it on that basis.
The watch side of a call

Audio processing for those features runs in the Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment on the S11 chip that Apple says handles on-device audio with immediate deletion. They are part of Series 12 from $399 and Ultra 4 from $799 rather than of any AirPods set, so if the appeal of a call handled on your wrist is what you are buying, the spend is on the watch, not the earbuds.
