Which Apple Watch for a Runner: SE 3 at $249, Series 12 at $399 or Ultra 4 at $799

For most runners the answer is Apple Watch Series 12 from $399, because it is the cheapest watch Apple sells with both a published outdoor-workout battery figure and a named GPS system. Apple Watch SE 3 from $249 is the right call only for short sessions, and Apple Watch Ultra 4 from $799 earns its premium on one number: 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode.

Apple sells exactly three watches now and publishes only a starting price for each. Every figure below comes from Apple’s spec, compare and store pages or its September 9 press releases, so treat the gaps as real gaps.

One row decides more purchases than the rest. Apple publishes an outdoor-workout figure for Series 12 and Ultra 4 and not for SE 3, so if your runs are long enough that battery is the question, the entry watch is the one model you cannot plan around.

Apple Watch Series 12 readiness
Readiness returns a daily 0 to 10 score with four recommendations. Image: Apple

Why Series 12 is the pick for most runners

Series 12 carries the S11 chip and the new Health Sensing System, which Apple says reads heart rate every five seconds all day and heart rate variability as often as every five minutes, 24 times more often than Series 11. Apple claims the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, citing a study of more than 1,000 participants run between July and August 2026, plus the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch and a new Steps complication. The same silicon and sensors appear in Ultra 4, so the $400 step up does not buy better sensing.

The running numbers are up to 10 hours of outdoor workout, 24 hours of normal use, 38 hours in Low Power Mode and a 15-minute charge Apple rates at 12 hours of use. Five minutes covers up to 10 hours of sleep tracking, which matters when overnight data and a morning run come out of the same battery. Readiness, the new daily 0 to 10 score, draws on recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep and returns one of four labels: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It.

The catch is the ceiling. Ten hours of outdoor workout is a long day rather than an unlimited one, Series 12 has no satellite communications, and Apple publishes no per-configuration prices, so titanium, ceramic and cellular versions of the $399 starting point stay unpriced until you configure one in the store.

When the $249 SE 3 is enough

SE 3 is the value buy when sessions are short. It keeps the S10 chip, 64GB of storage, a 50 m swimproof rating, a temperature sensor and an Always-On display at up to 1000 nits, and at 26.3 g for the 40mm GPS model it is the lightest watch Apple sells. Apple rates it at up to 18 hours of normal use, 32 hours in Low Power Mode and about 45 minutes to 80 percent.

The catch is what is absent. SE 3’s spec sheet lists no electrical heart sensor and no Blood Oxygen sensor, so the ECG and Blood Oxygen apps are not part of the $249 watch, and the front is Ion-X glass rather than the Ceramic Shield 2 on Series 12 aluminum. It briefly vanished from Apple’s store before the September event and is listed again at From $249, a 2025 model sold beside two 2026 ones.

When Ultra 4 earns the extra $400

Ultra 4 is the only Apple Watch built for a race that outlasts a working day: up to 50 hours of normal use, 84 hours in Low Power Mode, 18 hours of outdoor workout, 25 hours in Extended Workout mode and up to 45 hours in a new Max Extended Workout mode that logs GPS at one-second intervals, which Apple positions for 100-mile races. A 15-minute charge is rated at 18 hours. Apple calls its dual-frequency system the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch, and satellite communications include two years on Ultra 3 and later.

The catches are weight and fit. Ultra 4 is 63.0 g in natural titanium against 39.5 g for a 46mm aluminum Series 12, the case measures 49mm by 44mm by 12mm, and Apple lists a wrist range of 130 to 210mm. At From $799 it is twice the Series 12 entry price for sensing that is identical on paper.

Which AirPods go on the run

SetPriceBattery with noise cancelling onWater ratingThe catch
AirPods 5$129Up to 4 hours, 20 hours with the caseIP57USB-C case only, no wireless charging, no case speaker
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case$149Up to 5 hours, 22 hours with the caseIP57The extra $20 buys charging options, a case speaker and volume swipe, not better sound
AirPods Pro 3$249Up to 8 hours, 24 hours with the caseIP57Rated 6.5 hours when the heart rate sensor is in use

Do not mix up the two AirPods 5 models, because almost everyone does. Five hours with noise cancelling on and 22 hours with the case belong to the $149 Wireless Charging Case version, while the standard $129 model is rated at four and 20. Both are IP57. Only the $249 tier has a heart rate sensor for workouts, and Apple’s new movement evaluations list AirPods Pro 3 as one accepted source for a VO2 max reading alongside Apple Watch.

What has not been confirmed

  • SE 3’s outdoor-workout battery figure. Apple publishes one for Series 12 and Ultra 4 and not for SE 3.
  • Per-configuration prices. Apple lists only From $249, From $399 and From $799.
  • Band prices, and any real-world running accuracy, because no retail unit has been used yet.
  • Talk time for any AirPods model, which Apple does not list on the spec pages we read.
