Color is the one choice you cannot change after purchase without a return, and this year’s palette is a clear shift from the iPhone 17 Pro’s: Black is back after a year away, Cosmic Orange is gone, and two new shades replace it. Here is how to think about each one.

Black or Silver: the safe picks

Silver is the neutral alternative, and the one that shows the least tint of the four. If you want the phone to disappear into a case or a desk setup, either of these is the pick.
Glacier or Burgundy: the new shades
Glacier is a light blue and the softer of the two new colors. It is the choice if you want something that reads as a color in daylight without being loud.
Burgundy is a dark cherry red and the most distinctive finish in the lineup. Apple describes the rear finish as new for this generation but has not published detail on the material or texture, so judge the shade in person if you can before committing.
Cases change the answer
Apple’s updated Clear Case shows the color through, while the silicone and FineWoven cases cover the back entirely. If you plan to use an opaque case, pick whichever color you like for the small amount of finish that stays visible and do not overthink it.
Apple has not said whether any color will be in shorter supply at launch. In previous launches the new shades have often been the first to see delivery dates slip, which is worth bearing in mind if Glacier or Burgundy is your pick.
