CarPlay is available in most new cars today. You likely expect it when you sit behind the wheel. Tesla and Rivian stand out as two major brands that still refuse to support it. Now, with rumors swirling about Tesla adding CarPlay, Rivian’s CEO has addressed the criticism again.
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently spoke in a long interview that covered many topics, including the company’s decision to avoid CarPlay. The conversation offered more context on why Rivian continues to hold this line, even as customer pressure grows.
Rivian’s long-standing CarPlay position
RJ Scaringe has defended Rivian’s CarPlay stance several times before. He has argued that customers will eventually appreciate a system built entirely by Rivian. That message has not changed.
At the same time, his latest comments add a twist. Scaringe openly admitted that he prefers CarPlay when driving almost any vehicle that is not a Rivian or a Tesla.
“If I’m in a non-Rivian or non-Tesla and I get in, it’s like a disaster and I’m like, ‘Oh thank goodness there’s CarPlay,’” he said. He added that CarPlay has “thoughtful UI,” while insisting Rivian’s system aims to offer the same level of care.
Why Rivian rejects partial CarPlay support
Scaringe explained that CarPlay cannot control every function of a vehicle. Because of that limitation, Rivian would need to split the screen between its own system and Apple’s interface. He believes that creates a bad experience.
“There are instances where you could have a screen in a screen,” he said, before calling it “poor UI” and “a poor user experience.” He also argued Apple itself would never design its products that way.
Tesla rumors raise new questions
The discussion shifted when Tesla’s rumored CarPlay support came up. Scaringe admitted such a move could challenge Rivian’s position.
“Maybe,” he said. Still, he insisted Rivian’s goal remains clear. The company wants you to enjoy a fully integrated system so much that you stop thinking about CarPlay at all.
For now, Rivian is standing firm. But if Tesla changes course, the pressure on Rivian will only grow.
