Hui-yeon survives The Scandal, Lady Cho keeps her position but loses the one person who understood her, and Cho Won disappears after jumping from a ferry into the river. The finale never shows Cho Won’s body, so his death is strongly suggested by the scene but not confirmed as an absolute fact.
The three endings reverse the wager that began the drama. Lady Cho believed she could control desire, Cho Won treated seduction as a performance, and Hui-yeon was selected as an object whose virtue could be tested. By the final episode, Hui-yeon is the one who chooses life, while the two architects of the game lose control.

Hui-yeon refuses to die for the lie
Lady Cho’s last plan depends on society believing Hui-yeon died during a storm. The invented death would preserve a public story of female virtue and support a memorial gate, but it also requires the living Hui-yeon to remain erased. Cho Won finally tells Hui-yeon that their relationship began as a wager, destroying her trust while giving her the truth she needs to leave.
Hui-yeon does not return to him. She stays alive and eventually finds a place within a Christian community, but survival comes with secrecy because the official world already treats her as dead. Her ending is painful, yet it is the clearest rejection of the role others designed for her.
Cho Won’s river jump remains unconfirmed
The King detects the lie through weather records. There was no violent storm on the date described, only light rain, and the inconsistency exposes Cho Won’s false report. His connection to the King saves him from execution, but he is banished from court and stripped of the life that once protected his behavior.
Cho Won frees his servants and boards a ferry toward Yanjing. He then jumps into the dark water, leaving only absence behind. A body is never recovered on screen, and later letters arriving at his old home preserve a small possibility that he escaped and chose not to return.
Lady Cho keeps everything except control
Lady Cho appears to avoid the harshest public punishment. She retains her home, wealth and standing, but the apparent victory becomes isolation. She continues writing to Cho Won without knowing whether he is dead or simply gone, a fitting consequence for someone who tried to control every version of the story.
The finale’s real judgment is not evenly distributed punishment. It is uncertainty. Hui-yeon chooses a hidden future, Cho Won becomes an unresolved absence and Lady Cho is left with the one outcome she cannot manage.
