A big change is coming to the App Store that limits who can download romantic chat tools. To protect younger users from adult content, Apple restricts dating apps and AI virtual companions so only adults can get them. The new rule requires users to be at least 18 years old to use any platform offering romantic connections. This covers real human matching platforms as well as virtual companions built with chat software.

Developers must disclose romantic features by January next year

The company is adding two new questions for software makers starting November 16, 2026. Creators will need to state if their software offers romantic relationship features or shares real world locations.

Everyone has until January 12, 2027, to fill out these details. Any software that includes romance will get an automatic 18 and up age rating. This rule applies even if the relationship is just a chat with artificial intelligence characters rather than real people.

If a parent sets up content limits on an iPhone, these romantic platforms will completely hide from view for kids. Younger device owners will have to prove their age before they can download them.

Location tracking tools might keep a lower age rating in many places. However, Brazil has its own set of rules. In Brazil, location sharing gets an A16 rating, while dating tools get an A18 rating. Developers creating family safety trackers in Brazil can ask the local government for a special pass.

New age policies target virtual companions and location tracking tools

Virtual romance platforms have grown very popular lately. Since Apple restricts dating apps and AI chat platforms, developers have to rethink how they present their work.

Some creators might decide to remove romantic text features entirely to keep a lower age rating. Others might split their software into two different versions to separate general chat tools from adult relationship features.

The AI companion market is growing fast, and these platforms often let users build very personal connections. By setting this floor of 18 years and older, the digital storefront aims to draw a clear line between safe general chat tools and mature virtual romance.

This update gives parents clearer boundaries for what their kids can download. It also forces tech companies to be more open about how they use real world location tracking. The new rule makes the storefront a safer space for families without taking away these platforms from adult users.
