David Cartwright’s funeral makes River confront the personal cost of the intelligence legacy he inherited, rather than simply giving Season 6 a sad opening. For River, the loss removes the relative whose history helped shape both his career and his idea of what the service does to people.
That matters because David was never just River’s grandfather. He was an old intelligence figure with a long memory, a complicated moral record and a decline that had already made River’s relationship with him painful. The funeral turns that unresolved history into a present-tense problem: River must decide what kind of agent he wants to be when the person who embodied the old world is no longer there to explain it.

David had been one of MI5’s senior figures before age and illness changed his place in the story. Earlier seasons made River his reluctant caretaker as David’s memories became harder to separate from old tradecraft and old guilt. His death therefore does not neatly close an emotional arc. It deprives River of a living link to the parts of his family history he has often wanted to understand and sometimes wanted to escape.

That is why the funeral can matter even before it reveals a new secret. River is used to moving through danger with impatience and certainty. Grief is a different kind of pressure: it can make him more reckless, more determined to protect the people he still has, or more alert to the compromises David once accepted in the name of the service.
The family loss arrives as Slough House faces new danger
Apple says the season puts the Slow Horses in a retaliatory game connected to Diana Taverner. A funeral does not need to be the direct cause of that conflict to sharpen it. River enters the season emotionally exposed just as the team is pulled toward another threat, and that overlap can make routine decisions feel less routine.
David’s past also reminds River that intelligence institutions make private damage out of public strategy. The old guard may have called it necessity; River has watched enough consequences to know how incomplete that word can be. The premiere has an opportunity to let him mourn someone he loved while acknowledging that love does not erase what David represented.
A goodbye can change River’s sense of belonging
River’s connection to Slough House has always mixed embarrassment, loyalty and a need to prove he belongs somewhere better. David’s funeral complicates that ambition. Without his grandfather, River may feel less anchored to MI5’s establishment, but he may also see more clearly that the people at Slough House are the ones who keep showing up when official structures fail.
That does not mean grief will make River calmer or wiser overnight. It means the season has given his choices a personal frame. If he takes risks, resists authority or protects a colleague, the loss behind those actions now matters as much as the plot mechanics around him.
