The battery figure that keeps getting attached to the wrong model
The number that circulates most is 5 hours of listening with ANC on and 22 hours total with the case. Apple’s own newsroom language introduces AirPods 5 with that figure, and it is easy to read as describing the whole line. It describes only the $149 Wireless Charging Case model. The store page and the AirPods 5 product page both give the standard $129 model a lower ceiling: up to 4 hours with ANC on and up to 20 hours total once the case is factored in. With ANC switched off, the gap holds: 6 hours for the standard model against 7 hours for the case model.

Can you change volume on the AirPods 5 buds themselves?
Partly. Apple’s hardware spec table lists a force sensor on the stem of both AirPods 5 models, used for play, pause and calls. Only the $149 Wireless Charging Case model’s entry adds “force sensor with volume swipe” as a separate line. So the flat claim that AirPods 5 cannot change volume on the buds is not accurate as a blanket statement about the whole product. It is accurate for the $129 model and wrong for the $149 model, which is a distinction between two specific products rather than an absence in the line as a whole.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not explained why the volume swipe is tied to the case you buy rather than offered as a software toggle across both models, given that the earbud hardware itself is listed as identical. It has also not said whether a future software update could extend the gesture to the standard model, or whether the case model’s force sensor differs physically rather than only in software. Until Apple publishes more, the safest reading is the one its own spec pages already support: two different products, priced $20 apart, with battery life and one control gesture as the published differences.
As of September 12, 2026, six days before Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach stores alongside it, AirPods 5 is still available only to pre-order, with both models arriving in stores Friday, September 18.
