Apple is building a new way to handle your cellular service across multiple devices. The upcoming iOS 27 software release introduces a tool called iPhone Handoff. This addition will allow you to link two separate phones to a single mobile number. It means you can grab either iPhone on your way out the door and still receive all your regular calls and text messages normally.

The company briefly teased the idea on a large presentation screen at WWDC this past June, but skipped over the details. Now, a forum user on MacRumors named pdfu discovered a video showing how it actually works inside the Xcode 27 developer hub.

The cellular settings let you pick a main and companion device

When you open the standard iOS settings application and tap into the cellular menu, a new setup screen appears. The tool asks you to choose a main handset and a companion handset. The primary device holds your main digital SIM card. The secondary phone downloads a special companion SIM card. This link lets you swap back and forth between the two hardware models at any time while keeping the same phone number active on both.

All of your data rules and connection preferences stay locked to the primary device. Location sharing also automatically tracks whichever phone you are actively using at that moment, so your friends or family can still find you on a map.

The setup works well for anyone who wants to carry a top-tier model to the office, but prefers taking an older phone on a long-term trip or a messy hike. Just remember that this feature requires carrier support to function properly. Early reports suggest T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany might be among the first networks to turn the service on.

The full software update drops later this month, so we will find out which other cell providers plan to support this dual-phone option soon.
