Apple Retains Its Top Spot In Global Satellite Smartphone Shipments
Apple continues to lead the global market for smartphones equipped with satellite connectivity. A recent report indicates that nearly half of all mobile devices shipped globally could feature this technology by the end of the decade. As more brands jump into the satellite space, the iPhone maker holds onto its massive lead while the technology finally begins reaching a much wider consumer audience.
Premium phones drive the market as satellite connectivity becomes standard
Counterpoint Research shows that Apple is currently the top manufacturer of non-terrestrial network-capable phones. The company kick-started this trend when it partnered with Globalstar to bring emergency SOS features to its main lineup in 2022. Since then, it has maintained its clear advantage over competitors. Samsung currently leads the Android side of the market, taking a similar proprietary approach to connect users when cell towers are out of reach.
Right now, the premium segment completely dominates the satellite phone market. Analysts note that the technology still lacks daily use cases to drive massive adoption across cheaper devices. Most connections are strictly limited to emergency messaging and basic location sharing.
True mass adoption in the mid-range and budget phone markets will likely take a few more years. By 2030, analysts expect that almost forty six percent of all smartphones shipped across the USA and the rest of the world will support some form of satellite communication.
Other major phone brands and chipset makers are also trying to catch up. Qualcomm and MediaTek are actively building new modems to bring the technology to more Android devices.
Telecom companies like AT&T and T-Mobile are also forming partnerships with satellite operators to connect standard phones directly from space. Even with all this new competition, Apple sits comfortably in the lead because of its massive head start.
