Upgraded screen panels will push beyond current color limits
The new displays will cover 95 percent of the BT.2020 color standard. This is a big jump from the current standard that the company targets with its screens. In simple terms, this shift means you will see deeper and far more accurate reds, greens, and blues when looking at your device.
Reaching this new color target requires precise control over the light that each pixel emits. The company first introduced OLED technology to its high-end tablets in 2024. Next, it expects to bring these screens to the Mac lineup, specifically the pro-level laptops, sometime between late 2026 and early 2027.
To hit these ambitious color goals, screen makers are tweaking the chemical makeup of the layer inside each pixel that creates light. One approach involves making the pixel emit a purer color. Another method adds a helper material so the pixel turns energy into light more efficiently. A third strategy mixes in extra materials to help the panel stay bright for a longer time without fading.
