People are moving away from traditional television, and Apple TV is quietly scooping up these new viewers. When folks cancel regular pay television packages, many of them look for new ways to watch shows right away. Even as the company recently pushed a price hike for its media plans, its video service manages to grab a solid chunk of the market. People clearly want good content without sitting through commercials, and this platform fits the bill perfectly.

People ditch traditional cable and pay for ad-free streaming plans

Data from Antenna shows that during the first quarter, around 31 percent of people who drop traditional cable sign up for a new video service within a single month. This sign-up rate is five times higher than normal. When these users pick a new platform, most of them want an ad-free experience. Out of the top ten plans chosen by these former cable subscribers, six of them feature zero commercials.

Paramount+ Premium took the top spot with a 13.7 percent share. Netflix Premium and Peacock Premium followed closely behind. Among all these choices, Apple TV landed in the middle of the pack by capturing an 8.5 percent share of the market. This shows that the service is holding its own against older rivals. Most of these viewers already know what they want. Before cutting the cord, 72 percent of traditional television users already paid for at least one premium streaming service. For people moving away from digital bundles like YouTube TV, that number goes up to 84 percent.

Customer loyalty is also shifting. In July, the average cancellation rate across major video platforms sat at 4 percent. Netflix and Disney+ both kept a strong grip on subscribers, showing churn rates of 2 percent and 3 percent. The platform built by Apple saw a 5 percent churn rate, matching HBO Max. This means it still has room to improve its hold on subscribers compared to the top leaders, but it remains ahead of platforms like Paramount+ and Peacock.

As more people leave regular television behind, the fight for monthly subscribers is getting tighter. Platforms offering ad-free shows hold a clear advantage in winning over these new crowds. For a relatively young service, holding nearly a tenth of these new sign-ups is a strong position to build on.
