Apple recently agreed to pay $250 million to settle a major class action lawsuit regarding some missing artificial intelligence features. The lawsuit claimed that the company heavily advertised a smarter and much more personal version of its popular voice assistant when the newest phones launched. However, those specific upgrades were significantly delayed, leaving millions of eager buyers waiting for software updates that did not arrive on time.
The lawsuit focuses on delayed artificial intelligence features
When the newest devices were first announced, the company promised a major update to Siri that would allow it to understand personal context and take actions across different apps. A lawsuit filed against the company argued that these marketing campaigns convinced people to upgrade their devices to get features that were not actually available.
Instead of fighting the claims in a long trial, the company decided to settle the case for a quarter of a billion dollars. Apple agreed to pay the massive sum without admitting any actual wrongdoing. The company stated it wanted to move past the distraction and keep its focus on building new hardware and software.
Here is a list of the specific phones that qualify
The settlement is currently waiting for final approval from a federal judge. If the court gives the green light, owners of specific devices purchased in the United States between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, can file a claim to get some cash back.
To qualify for a piece of the settlement, you must have purchased one of these supported iPhone models during that exact time window:
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16
- iPhone 16 Plus
- iPhone 16 Pro
- iPhone 16 Pro Max
- iPhone 16e
Users could receive up to ninety-five dollars per device
If you own an eligible device, the exact amount of money you get will depend entirely on how many other people actually submit a claim. The lawyers handling the case expect the standard payment to be around $25 for each phone.
However, if a very small number of people fill out the necessary paperwork, that individual payout could jump to as high as $95 per device. Eligible buyers in the United States should look out for official website and email notices in the coming weeks that explain exactly how to submit a claim before the deadline. While the voice assistant updates are still rolling out slowly, at least some buyers will get a small refund for the wait.
