People with the newest Apple phones are running into a problem. When the battery completely drains on an iPhone 17 or iPhone Air, the device sometimes refuses to turn back on after being plugged in. Instead of showing the usual low battery icon or the startup logo, the screen just stays totally black.
A standard charging cable fails to wake the phone up right away, making it look like the device is completely broken.
A wireless charger helps bypass the wired power block issue
When the battery hits zero, a standard USB-C cable seems to have trouble pulling consistent voltage to start the reboot process. Users online note that the phone just sits there with a dark screen for minutes or even hours. Trying to force a hard reset does not help. Plugging the dead phone into a Mac also does nothing to wake it.
Thankfully, the fix is pretty simple, as reported by 9to5Mac. The best way to revive the handset is to place it on a MagSafe or standard wireless charging pad. Leaving the phone on a wireless charger for about ten to fifteen minutes usually gives it the jump it needs to boot up normally.
Some people mention that even technicians at the Apple Store are using wireless chargers as their first step to bypass the problem.
A stronger power brick might also wake the frozen device
Not everyone carries a wireless puck with them all day. If you are stuck without one, a few other methods might bring the phone back to life. Some owners report that using a high-wattage adapter, like a 61W or 65W laptop charger, can push enough power into the device to wake it up.
If you only have a normal cable and standard plug, your only other option is patience. Leaving the phone plugged into the wall for a few hours might eventually do the trick.
The bug does not happen every single time the battery dies, and it does not affect every single phone. Still, keeping the battery out of the red zone is the best way to avoid these issues entirely.
