Drivers using Google Maps on their car screens can now enjoy a much smarter driving companion. The company is officially bringing its advanced voice assistant directly to the CarPlay interface for a better conversational experience on the road. This marks the first time the navigation app features built-in voice capabilities for this specific dashboard display system. Previous versions kept these helpful voice tools restricted entirely to the phone application, meaning you had to rely on your handset instead of the larger screen.

Tap the new screen icon to give complex driving commands

When you are actively navigating to a destination, you will spot a new icon on the right edge of the screen. Tapping this button activates Gemini, allowing you to ask questions that require more than a simple yes or no answer.

This addition makes it easy to handle detailed requests without picking up your Apple device. You can give multi-step instructions or ask for specific route suggestions naturally.

Here are a few commands you can try:

  • “What park is famous for gorgeous views overlooking the city?”
  • “I want to go at a time when it is not too busy and the weather will stay nice. Is now a good time?”
  • “Start navigating me there but make sure to avoid toll roads.”

You can also use your voice to report traffic disruptions along your path. This update brings the car display in line with the experience already available on Android Auto. It also matches the features the company added to its mobile app for iOS phones last year.

At the moment, the update is live for drivers in the US. A wider global release is currently in progress. As it expands, more people will get to keep their hands on the wheel while still getting detailed help for their next trip.
