Instagram recently began testing a new standalone application called Instants, designed specifically for sharing temporary, unedited photos and videos. Meta aims to recreate a spontaneous social experience by removing the pressure of curated feeds and polished content.
The platform allows users to send quick snapshots that vanish after a single view, positioning its new product as a direct alternative to platforms like Snapchat and BeReal.
The standalone application restricts camera uploads and advanced editing features
Instants opens directly to the camera to facilitate rapid content creation. Users cannot upload existing images or videos from their device gallery. The application requires all content to be captured in real time using the built-in lens.
Once a photo is taken, the customization options remain extremely limited. Users can add basic text to their images, but the application does not support traditional filters or complex editing tools. The focus remains entirely on raw, unpolished moments.
After sending, the shared media follows strict ephemeral rules. Recipients can view the photo or video only once, and the content completely disappears from the platform after a 24-hour window. This mechanism ensures that the media remains temporary and cannot be saved or reviewed multiple times.
The service synchronizes directly with existing Instagram friend lists
Users do not need to build a new network from scratch to use the service. Instants requires an existing Instagram login and automatically syncs with the user’s established mutual followers and Close Friends lists. This integration allows people to communicate with their current social circles immediately.
The software connects the two platforms directly. Content captured and sent through Instants can be viewed inside the main Instagram application. Users have the flexibility to interact with temporary messages in either location without missing updates from their connections.
Currently, the application is available on both Android and iOS devices in select international markets, including Italy and Spain. Meta continues to test different versions of the software while evaluating community feedback before it commits to a wider global release.
