The split comes from the same connectivity-discount mechanic Apple built into every iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max checkout this year, and it decides something today rather than in the abstract: pre-orders opened at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, which is 12:00 UTC, and the carrier choice is made once, at the moment of purchase.

What “connect with a carrier” actually requires
Apple’s own disclosure reads: “Connectivity discounts are reflected in the advertised price of select iPhone models, and are available to customers who connect with select carriers at the time of purchase.” It names the mechanism and never names a dollar amount for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Apple’s footnote 13 adds a wrinkle: financing “requires users to select Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) as their payment type at checkout… They’ll need to select AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon as their carrier when they check out. An iPhone purchased with ACMI is always unlocked, so they can switch carriers at any time.” A carrier has to be chosen to reach $1,299, and the phone that results is unlocked regardless of that choice.
Apple’s own trade-in wording only adds to the arithmetic. The press release states that customers trading in an iPhone 13 or later can get $175 to $885 in credit instantly, applied at the same checkout where the carrier choice is made, and subtracted from whichever of the two starting prices the buyer lands on.
The storage ladder above 256GB, on both bases
Apple’s configurator confirms the $1,299-to-$1,399 gap at 256GB by publishing two different starting prices for the same phone. Carried up the storage ladder on that same connectivity-discount pattern, the tiers above 256GB look like this.

Apple has directly confirmed the $100 gap only at the 256GB tier. The figures above 512GB, 1TB and 2TB apply that same connectivity discount consistently rather than reflect a second price list Apple has separately printed at every tier, and that distinction is worth keeping in mind before treating them as gospel.
Why the UK does not have this split
Apple’s UK newsroom post and the UK store both list the iPhone 18 Pro Max 256GB at £1,299, the same number whichever way it is bought. The $100 U.S. gap is a carrier-subsidy artifact of the American market, not a pricing structure Apple runs everywhere it sells this phone. Canada, Singapore and the UAE each show one price per tier the same way, with no visible carrier-versus-unlocked split at checkout.
What Apple has not said
- The exact $100 delta, stated as its own figure on any Apple page.
- A separately confirmed unlocked price for the 512GB, 1TB or 2TB Pro Max.
- An Apple Upgrade lease figure for the Pro Max at any capacity; the published lease rate covers only the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro.
- Whether Boost, listed as a carrier option at checkout, qualifies for the same connectivity discount as AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.
