iPhone Duo has no Face ID. Apple’s own pages put Touch ID in the side button instead, working with the phone open or closed, and add that the phone can also be unlocked from a nearby Apple Watch.
That single change is behind more confusion than almost anything else Apple announced about its first foldable. Here is what its pages actually confirm, and where they stay quiet.

What Apple confirms about Touch ID
Apple’s iPhone Duo tech specs page lists Touch ID in the side button, with no Face ID, as the phone’s only biometric method. Apple’s product page adds that it works with iPhone Duo open or closed, and that it recognizes multiple fingerprints.

Apple’s product page also states that iPhone Duo can be unlocked using a nearby Apple Watch. Apple does not specify on that page whether Watch unlock extends to Apple Pay purchases and other confirmations, or is limited to unlocking the phone itself.
Does the inner camera do anything biometric
No. Apple’s tech specs list the inner, under-display camera as an f/1.8 camera built for FaceTime, capped at 1080p and paired with Center Stage framing. Apple does not describe it as a Face ID sensor or attach any biometric function to it anywhere in its documentation.
The outer display camera is a separate 12MP Center Stage sensor at f/2.2 with Retina Flash, built for video calls and stills when the phone is closed. Both cameras exist for imaging, not authentication, according to everything Apple has published.
Apple’s Center Stage framing, which it also uses on the outer camera and on the rear camera during video calls, automatically keeps a subject centered as they move. It is a framing feature, not a recognition feature, and Apple does not describe it doing anything with a face beyond keeping it in frame.
What happened to the Action Button
Apple’s iPhone Duo pages never use the phrase Action Button. What they describe instead is the Touch ID side button and a separate Camera Control button that Apple says opens a Siri Camera mode and drives the same zero-shutter-lag capture Apple attributes to the Main camera. Whether the side button itself can be remapped to another function is not stated anywhere Apple has published.

How this compares with Apple’s Face ID phones
iPhone 18 Pro, announced the same day, keeps Face ID and its Dynamic Island unchanged. On a Face ID iPhone, Face ID also gates App Store purchases, third-party app logins and any prompt an app writes specifically for it. Apple has not published whether an app that asks for Face ID by name recognizes Touch ID as a substitute on iPhone Duo, or simply falls back to a passcode.
Apple has not published a joint explanation for why its newest iPhone drops Face ID while its flagship Pro keeps it, either, only the separate feature lists for each phone.

What Apple has not said
Apple has not published whether Apple Watch unlock on iPhone Duo covers Apple Pay and other purchase confirmations, whether the side button can be reassigned, or how Stolen Device Protection behaves without Face ID’s attention-aware checks. Each is a reasonable question with no answer yet on Apple’s own pages.
