“No physical SIM anywhere” is not quite what Apple says. Apple names a specific list of 12 places where iPhone 18 Pro drops its SIM tray, and separately states that iPhone Duo has no SIM tray in any market it sells in at all. Those are two different facts about two different phones, and they are getting collapsed into one.

That is 12 places out of the more than 65 countries and regions where iPhone 18 Pro becomes available on September 18. A named list of eSIM-only markets is, by its own logic, a statement that the rest of iPhone 18 Pro’s launch markets are not on it. Apple has not published a second list confirming a tray everywhere else in as many words, but naming 12 specific exceptions only makes sense if a tray remains the default outside them.
Why iPhone Duo is different
iPhone Duo carries no such list, because Apple states plainly that the phone is eSIM only worldwide. Its tech specs page describes dual eSIM, two active at once, storing eight or more, and adds the line “not compatible with physical SIM cards.” That applies across every market Apple sells it in, not a subset.
iPhone Duo reaches more than 70 countries and regions on October 23, with 28 more following on October 30, and Apple’s eSIM-only wording covers all of them the same way. Two active eSIMs at once means a Duo owner can keep a personal line and a work or travel line running without swapping anything, the same dual-eSIM design Apple already ships on the 12 eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro units.
What that means for travelers
A buyer moving a line onto iPhone 18 Pro outside the 12 named markets can still expect a physical SIM tray, according to Apple’s own list. A buyer moving a line onto iPhone Duo, anywhere Apple sells it, is working with eSIM only, because Apple has not published any exception to that for its foldable.
Apple does not publish a carrier-by-carrier eSIM compatibility list for either phone, so whether a specific carrier supports eSIM transfer in a given market is a separate question its pages do not answer.
The connectivity Apple confirms alongside eSIM
Apple pairs iPhone Duo’s eSIM-only design with satellite features it says are included free for two years: Messages via satellite, Emergency SOS via satellite and Roadside Assistance via satellite. Those are separate from cellular service and do not depend on which eSIM is active.
Apple also lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread and NFC with reader mode on iPhone Duo, the same wireless standards it built into iPhone 18 Pro. None of those change depending on a market’s SIM policy.

What Apple has not said
Apple has not published why iPhone 18 Pro’s SIM-tray removal is limited to 12 markets while iPhone Duo drops the tray everywhere, nor has it published a country-by-country eSIM carrier list for either phone. Both remain gaps in Apple’s own documentation.
