Apple has introduced a new way to personalize your iPhone with iOS 27, making it easier than ever to create custom wallpapers directly on your device. Alongside the new wallpapers that ship with iOS 27, Apple now lets users generate unique AI-powered wallpapers that are perfectly sized for the iPhone screen.
The feature comes as part of Apple’s updated Image Playground experience, which now offers more advanced image generation tools and greater creative flexibility. While Image Playground remains available as a standalone app, iOS 27 also brings its capabilities directly into the wallpaper creation process.
Follow these steps to generate your own AI wallpaper:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Select Add New Wallpaper.
- Alternatively, long-press the Lock Screen and tap the + button.
- In the wallpaper gallery, choose Image Playground from the top row.
- Enter a description of the image you want to create.
- Optionally, choose a specific style or use an existing photo or person as inspiration.
- Wait for the image to generate, then set it as your wallpaper.
Apple also places AI-generated wallpaper suggestions throughout the wallpaper gallery. Many of these suggestions are based on your existing photos and transformed into artistic styles that work well as wallpapers. Every AI-generated image includes the Image Playground icon, making it clear that the artwork was created using Apple’s AI tools.
Once your image is ready, iOS 27 automatically formats it to fit the iPhone display, allowing you to apply it immediately without any additional editing.
