AirPods 5 work with an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV or Apple Vision Pro running the latest operating system, and that is the only device requirement Apple’s tech specs list for the earbuds. The shorter list is the second one: hands-free Siri AI and Live Translation need an Apple Intelligence device, which rules out every iPhone older than iPhone 15 Pro.
The hardware itself is generation-neutral. Both models use the H2 chip and Bluetooth 5.3, they cost $129 and $149, and they reach stores on Friday, September 18. The software most of their headline features depend on, iOS 27, arrives four days earlier on Monday, September 14. Apple’s tech specs set a single baseline for AirPods 5: an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV or Apple Vision Pro running the latest operating system. There is no per-model list on the AirPods 5 page, so the practical question is which of your devices can run the current release.

On iPhone that release is iOS 27. Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility list runs from iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max all the way back to iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), so a 2019 iPhone can still pair AirPods 5 and use the noise cancellation. On the wrist the current release is watchOS 27, which Apple lists for Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, 10, 11 and 12, and Ultra 2, 3 and 4. Series 8, SE 2 and the original Ultra are not on that list. The new Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 both ship with watchOS 27 on September 18, the same day as the earbuds.

Apple’s Apple Intelligence device list is explicit: all iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad models with M1 and later, MacBook Neo (A18 Pro), Mac models with M1 and later, Apple Vision Pro with M2 and later, and Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with a compatible iPhone. Buy AirPods 5 for an iPhone 14 and the earbuds still work; the assistant features do not.
Region matters as much as hardware. Apple’s iOS 27 page says Siri AI is rolling out in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October, and that it will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS or watchOS. Apple has also said Apple Intelligence features in China are waiting on regulatory approval, and Apple Support says Live Translation with AirPods is not available in China mainland.
Apple’s support pages have not caught up yet
Two of Apple’s published AirPods guides still describe the pre-AirPods 5 lineup. The Live Translation guide lists AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2, with iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on and the Translate app installed. The head gestures guide names the same four models.
AirPods 5 appear on neither list yet, even though Apple’s own AirPods 5 tech specs list both features. Those guides document the software shipping today rather than iOS 27, so treat their model lists as pre-launch and expect them to change on September 14. What Apple has not said
- Whether AirPods 5 pair with non-Apple devices. The spec page lists only Apple hardware, although the earbuds use standard Bluetooth 5.3.
- A minimum iOS version for AirPods 5. Apple’s pairing guide lists iOS 18 for AirPods 4 and iOS 26 for AirPods Pro 3, but has no AirPods 5 line.
- Which AirPods models can join a Listen together session with a set of AirPods 5.
- Which languages Live Translation covers on AirPods 5, or when the earbuds join the support guide’s compatible-model list.
- Which colors AirPods 5 come in; Apple’s tech specs page does not list them.
