Apple has not said whether the gestures can be customized, whether they work with third-party apps, or whether they can be turned off independently of other AirPods 5 controls. Those details usually appear in Apple’s product pages and support documents rather than the launch release.
Head gestures and the Siri AI connection
The gestures are most useful when paired with a voice assistant that asks questions, and that is where Siri AI comes in. Apple’s release says hands-free Siri AI on AirPods 5 needs iOS 27 and an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence.
Apple has not said whether head gestures themselves require Siri AI, iOS 27 or an Apple Intelligence iPhone. AirPods 5 are open-ear earbuds, and Apple’s release positions them as the first at this level with Active Noise Cancellation, removing up to 50 percent more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC.
