AirPods 5 and iPhone 18 Pro were announced together today, and one AirPods 5 feature only works with an Apple Intelligence iPhone running iOS 27: hands-free Siri AI. The $129 earbuds and the $1,199 phone both go on sale Friday, September 18.
The pairing is less exclusive than it might sound. Apple’s requirement is any Apple Intelligence iPhone, not the iPhone 18 Pro specifically, and Apple has not announced any AirPods 5 feature that is limited to the new phone.
Hands-free Siri AI: what AirPods 5 need from the iPhone
Apple’s press release lists hands-free Siri AI as an AirPods 5 feature that needs iOS 27 and an Apple Intelligence iPhone. iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14, four days before the earbuds ship, with Siri AI launching in beta in English.

French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follow in October. Apple says Apple Intelligence runs on-device and with Private Cloud Compute, and the iPhone 18 Pro’s A20 Pro chip carries a dual 16-core Neural Engine that Apple says doubles the AI processing of the A19 Pro.
Apple has not said whether Siri AI responds faster on an iPhone 18 Pro than on an older Apple Intelligence iPhone, and it has not listed which iPhone models qualify in the AirPods 5 release.
Bluetooth 6 on iPhone 18 Pro: what it means for AirPods 5
iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Apple has not published which Bluetooth version AirPods 5 support, and it has not named the chip inside the earbuds, so there is no confirmed Bluetooth 6 benefit for this pairing yet.
Apple’s AirPods 5 release describes Live Translation as working with compatible devices and the latest firmware, without naming iPhone models. The other headline features, ANC, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and head-gesture replies, are described as AirPods features with no iPhone 18 Pro dependency.
