The longest single-charge rating Apple publishes for any AirPods earbud is up to 8 hours, on AirPods Pro 3 with Active Noise Cancellation running. AirPods 5 is rated at up to 4 hours with ANC on and up to 6 hours with noise control off, rising to 5 and 7 hours on the $149 Wireless Charging Case model.

Put seven years of Apple ratings in one place and the line does not rise steadily. Noise cancellation costs hours, the with-case totals peaked at 30 hours in the middle of the run, and the standard AirPods have moved between 4 and 7 hours depending on which mode you leave switched on. Every number here is Apple’s own, from its tech specs pages and press releases.

The standard AirPods: 5 hours, then 6, then a choice of modes

The second-generation AirPods set the baseline in 2019 at up to 5 hours of listening. AirPods 3 raised that to 6 hours in 2021, with a separate 5-hour figure when Personalized Spatial Audio was on, then AirPods 4 went back to 5 hours in 2024.

AirPods 5 splits the difference by mode rather than by model. With noise control off it is rated at 6 hours, or 7 hours on the version with the Wireless Charging Case, which is the highest single-charge rating Apple has published for a standard pair of AirPods. Switch Active Noise Cancellation on and the rating drops to 4 or 5 hours, exactly the pattern Apple set with AirPods 4 with ANC two years earlier. Our AirPods 5 announcement coverage has the rest of the specification.

The Pro line: 4.5 hours to 8 hours in six years

The Pro side has climbed more cleanly. Apple rated the first AirPods Pro at up to 4.5 hours with noise cancellation or Transparency on, AirPods Pro 2 at up to 6 hours, and AirPods Pro 3 at up to 8 hours.

AirPods Pro 3 also carries the most mode-specific ratings of any model: up to 10 hours in Transparency with the Hearing Aid feature, up to 7.5 hours with Spatial Audio and head tracking, and up to 6.5 hours when the heart rate sensor is running during a workout. AirPods Pro 2 has its own second figure, 5.5 hours with Spatial Audio and head tracking.

With the case, the high-water mark was 30 hours

ModelTotal with the caseQuick charge
AirPods (2nd generation)More than 24 h15 minutes for up to 3 h
AirPods (3rd generation)Up to 30 h5 minutes for around 1 h
AirPods Pro 2Up to 30 h5 minutes for around 1 h
AirPods 4Up to 30 h5 minutes for around 1 h
AirPods 4 with ANCUp to 20 h with ANC on5 minutes for around 1 h
AirPods Pro 3Up to 24 h with ANC on5 minutes for around 1 h
AirPods 5Up to 20 h, or 22 h on the $149 model5 minutes for around 1 h

Three separate models reached 30 hours in total: AirPods 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2. Every model Apple rates with noise cancellation running sits lower, between 20 and 24 hours, because the quoted total assumes the earbuds are cancelling noise the whole time. The 5-minute quick-charge claim of around an hour of listening has held steady since 2021, and the outlier is the 2019 model, which Apple rated at 15 minutes for up to 3 hours.

What Apple has not said

  • Talk time for any of these models. None of the spec pages above list it.
  • A noise-control-off rating for AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3. Apple’s spec pages give the ANC-on figures only.
  • Battery capacity in milliampere-hours for any AirPods model.
  • How the ratings change as a set of AirPods ages, or a cycle count.
  • A quick-charge figure for the first-generation AirPods Pro, which Apple’s spec page omits.

If you are choosing on battery life alone, the ranking today is AirPods Pro 3 at $249 for 8 hours with noise cancellation, then AirPods 5 at $129 or $149 for 4 to 7 hours depending on the mode and the case. AirPods 5 is on pre-order now and reaches stores on Friday, September 18, the same day iPhone 18 Pro goes on sale, and our event recap covers everything Apple announced alongside it.
