Buying Apple’s 2026 Devices for a Child: Every Age Limit and Setup Rule Apple Published

If you are buying any of Apple’s 2026 products for a child, the decisions are made for you by a set of age limits Apple published in footnotes rather than on stage. Siri AI is not available to users under 13, the ECG app is intended for people 22 and over, sleep apnea notifications are for people 18 and over without an existing diagnosis, and hypertension notifications exclude anyone under 22.

Those limits sit alongside a genuinely new setup route. Apple’s watchOS 27 page lists child accounts with built-in protections and an Apple Watch For Your Kids setup that does not require an iPhone, and the expanded parental controls in iOS 27 arrive on the same day, Monday, September 14.

The age floors Apple published

The under-13 rule on Siri AI is the one most likely to surprise a family, because it applies to the assistant Apple has built this entire release around. Apple states it once, in a footnote, and does not explain what a child account sees instead.

The health limits are older and better established, but they now sit on a watch Apple markets on health more heavily than ever. The Series 12 Health Sensing System reads heart rate every five seconds and takes HRV readings up to 24 times more often than Series 11, and none of that changes the age floors on the features that interpret it.

Apple Watch For Your Kids in watchOS 27

Apple’s watchOS 27 page lists Apple Watch For Your Kids setup without an iPhone under its child safety section, and the Series 12 specification page names Apple Watch For Your Kids in its connectivity list alongside Apple Pay, GymKit and international roaming. That is the extent of what Apple has published about it.

watchOS 27 itself arrives on Monday, September 14 and runs on Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Series 12, Ultra 2, Ultra 3 and Ultra 4. The parent’s phone still matters: Apple’s footnote requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE second generation or later, running iOS 27.

What parents get in iOS 27 on Monday

The child safety set in iOS 27 is the largest in years. Apple lists child accounts, a Setup Assistant that lets a parent choose exactly which system apps a child can use, Ask to Browse so a child must request permission for new websites, Ask to Buy, Time Allowances across categories such as Entertainment, Games and Social Media, schedules that set which apps are available at different times or days, a redesigned Screen Time and Screen Time passcode notifications.

Communication Safety also widens. Apple says it now intervenes before children see gore or violent content in shared images and videos, in addition to nudity, across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and watchOS 27. One detail is easy to miss: Apple states the new features become available after installing the Screen Time update in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, which is not the same thing as installing the operating system.

Covering a household rather than a device

AppleCare One Family was announced on September 9 at $49.99 a month, covering up to six people set up through Family Sharing, with theft and loss protection for eligible iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch models and six total claims a year across the group. Devices qualify if they are less than four years old and in good working condition, new purchases are added automatically, and the price does not move with the device count. It becomes available on Monday, September 14.

The single-person plan, AppleCare One, remains $19.99 a month for up to three products with additional devices at $5.99 each. Per-device AppleCare Plus pricing for iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo, AirPods 5, Series 12 and Ultra 4 has not been published at all, so a family comparing the two routes is working with only one set of numbers.

What each option costs

ProductStarting priceAvailable
Apple Watch SE 3$249On sale now
Apple Watch Series 12, 42mm$399Friday, September 18
AirPods 5$129, or $149 with the Wireless Charging CaseFriday, September 18
iPhone 18 Pro$1,199Friday, September 18
iPhone Duo$1,999Friday, October 23

Two notes for a family budget. The AirPods 5 figures split by case, so the four-hour listening claim with noise cancellation belongs to the $129 model and the five-hour claim to the $149 one. And AirPods 5 do not include a USB-C charge cable or a power adapter, which is a real cost if the child does not already have one.

What Apple has not said

  • Whether Apple Watch For Your Kids requires a cellular watch. Apple names the feature and publishes no requirement beyond the paired iPhone.
  • What a child under 13 sees in place of Siri AI, or which features quietly depend on it.
  • Any per-device AppleCare Plus price for a single product launched this month.
  • Whether the new child safety features are available in every country on day one.
  • Any support document for the new products, including setup guidance. None had been published as of September 11.

iOS 27 and watchOS 27 both arrive on Monday, September 14, and AppleCare One Family opens the same day. Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5 reach stores on Friday, September 18. iPhone Duo, with the Kid Cue animations Apple built into its outer display to hold a child’s attention during a photo, does not arrive until Friday, October 23.
