If you are buying one Apple product for still photography this month, buy the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro. It is the only iPhone Apple sells with a variable aperture, a 48MP telephoto lens and an 8x optical-quality zoom, and it starts at $1,199 with carrier connectivity selected at checkout.
Apple’s tech specs give iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max the same three 48MP cameras, so the step up to the larger model buys battery life and screen size rather than better pictures. Every other iPhone in the lineup gives up at least one of those three cameras, and that is the whole decision.

Why the 18 Pro wins on published numbers
Apple lists four aperture stops on the main camera, f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, with manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app. No other iPhone Apple sells has a variable aperture at all: iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo all list a fixed f/1.6 main camera. The variable aperture is the single feature a photographer cannot get anywhere else in the lineup.

The second reason is reach. iPhone 18 Pro carries a 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 100 mm f/2.8 with a tetraprism and 3D sensor-shift stabilisation, which Apple turns into optical-quality crops it labels 12MP 2x at 48 mm and 12MP 8x at 200 mm. iPhone 17 and iPhone Duo have no telephoto lens, only a 2x crop of the main sensor, so their optical zoom range is 4x against 16x.
The third is what leaves the phone. iPhone 18 Pro has USB-C at USB 3 speeds, up to 10 Gb/s. iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPhone 16 are USB 2 at 480 Mb/s, which is the same cable doing roughly a twentieth of the work on a card-sized import.

The Duo case deserves a line of its own, because $1,999 buys the biggest iPhone display and the smallest Pro camera set. Apple describes a 48MP Dual Fusion system of a 26 mm f/1.6 main and a 13 mm f/2.2 Ultra Wide, with a 12MP 2x crop and up to 10x digital zoom. It also ships two weeks after everything else on this page, on Friday, October 23.
The storage decision, and the number Apple hides in a PDF
Apple’s store lists 512GB at $1,399, 1TB at $1,799 and 2TB at $2,399. The 6.3-inch 256GB model is $1,199 with carrier connectivity selected and $1,299 unlocked, and Apple does not print that $100 difference as a line item anywhere on the page.
There is a second cost to the top tier that no product page shows. Apple’s Product Environmental Report puts iPhone 18 Pro at 63 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent at 256GB, rising to 109 kg at 2TB. If the 2TB tier is on your shortlist for raw capture, that is a 46 kg difference Apple publishes only in the PDF.
The part of the upgrade that costs nothing
Most of Apple’s 2026 photography software is a free update rather than a purchase. iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14 and runs on iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), bringing Spatial Reframing, the Extend tool, an enhanced Clean Up and Apple Reference Image, which stores an untouched original with verification metadata alongside the edits. The Apple Intelligence editing tools need iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 or later.
So if your current iPhone is a 15 Pro or a 16 Pro, Monday delivers the software half of this list free, and the hardware case rests on the variable aperture, the 48MP telephoto and USB 3. Our Pro against Pro Max comparison covers the size half of the question.
What has not been confirmed
- Apple has published no per-device AppleCare+ price for any product it launched in September 2026.
- Apple has published no prices for the iPhone 18 Pro clear case, silicone case, wrist strap or crossbody strap. The iPhone Duo Case at $79 and the Folio at $129 are the only 2026 case prices Apple lists.
- Apple publishes no sample-image comparison, lens test or resolution measurement against any other camera.
- Apple publishes only a trade-in range, $175 to $885 in the US for an iPhone 13 or later, not a per-model table.
- No new Mac or iPad was announced on September 9, so there is no fresh Apple editing machine to pair with any of this.
Pre-orders are open now, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max reach stores on Friday, September 18 in more than 65 countries, and a second wave of countries follows on Friday, September 25. iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 for a October 23 release, so a photographer choosing between the Pro and the foldable has until then to decide.
