Apple says the audio behind the new listening features on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 is handled inside a Secure Exclave, which it describes as a dedicated hardware-isolated compartment on the S11 chip, and that no audio recordings are stored.
That claim sits under a feature category Apple barely discussed on stage. Support document 148354, published September 9, defines Audio Intelligence as features that use the microphones of Apple Watch, the power of Apple silicon, and on-device and cloud-based AI models. The second half of that sentence is the part worth following.

What Apple says the Secure Exclave is
Apple’s line on the Series 12 page is that Audio Intelligence uses the built-in microphone and secure S11 chip, alongside the power of Apple Intelligence, to help you make sense of what you hear in a private and secure way. The Secure Exclave is the hardware part of that sentence: a compartment Apple describes as isolated, used for on-device audio processing, with immediate deletion afterwards.

The same chip, and the same description, apply to Apple Watch Ultra 4 as well as Apple Watch Series 12. Apple has published no separate wording for the two watches.
The half of the sentence that is not on the watch
Apple’s support document does not say the processing is entirely local. It names on-device and cloud-based AI models together, and it does not say which of the four capabilities use which. Sound Recognition and Music Recognition are listed as available now; Live Rewind and Siri Recap are due in beta later in 2026.
Two further published details sit alongside that. Audio Intelligence carries daily usage limits, the same marker Apple applies elsewhere to features that rely on server-side models, and it requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. The isolation claim and the cloud reference are both Apple’s own, and Apple has not set out in public how the two fit together.

Live Rewind returns the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet after a double-press of the Digital Crown. Siri Recap returns high-level summaries of conversations. Both are English only at the start, with additional languages that Apple says are planned for future releases but has not listed.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not said which Audio Intelligence capabilities reach the cloud models it names. It has not published how long a Live Rewind text snippet or a Siri Recap summary is kept, or whether either joins the conversation history the Siri app syncs through iCloud. Its published description does not cover what, if anything, the watch shows to other people while these features are running, and it does not say whether the Secure Exclave handles anything other than audio.
