The cellular versions of Apple Watch Series 12 connect over 5G using RedCap, according to Apple’s tech specs, which list “Supports RedCap for 5G and LTE” for the two cellular models, A3582 and A3587. RedCap is short for Reduced Capability, a lighter 5G profile for small devices, so Series 12 is a 5G watch without carrying a phone-class 5G radio.
Apple Watch Series 11 brought 5G to cellular models last year, and Apple’s compare page now marks 5G as available on Series 12, Ultra 4, Series 11, Ultra 3 and SE 3. What RedCap means in plain English
RedCap, or Reduced Capability, is a 5G specification written for devices that do not need the full bandwidth, antenna count or peak throughput of a smartphone modem. A watch, a fitness tracker or a sensor gets a genuine 5G connection, but with simpler hardware that draws less power and takes up less space.

Apple’s tech specs use the term without defining it and do not quote data speeds, so the practical reading is this: a cellular Series 12 does what the cellular Apple Watch has always done, calls, messages, streaming, maps and notifications away from your iPhone, over a 5G network rather than LTE where a carrier supports it, and over LTE where it does not.
The band list is the other clue. Apple lists 14 FDD and 3 TDD 5G NR bands plus 23 LTE bands for Series 12, which is a wide footprint for a watch and the reason Apple can list international roaming under connectivity.
Why the watch does not use full 5G, or Wi-Fi 7
Apple has not explained the choice, so any answer is a reading of the spec sheet rather than a quote. The 42 mm aluminum Series 12 weighs 32.2 g and is rated for 24 hours of normal use, and every wireless component in it is sized to that budget: Wi-Fi 4 rather than the Wi-Fi 7 in iPhone 18 Pro, Bluetooth 5.3 rather than Bluetooth 6, and RedCap rather than a full 5G modem.
The watch also does not need to carry everything itself. Apple’s tech specs say Series 12 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27, and the iPhone handles setup, app installs and most heavy data. RedCap covers the traffic a watch generates on its own, and it does so on a network Apple’s carrier partners are already deploying.

Two details stand out. Ultra 3’s support tech specs use the same RedCap wording as Series 12, while Apple’s Ultra 4 spec page lists 5G NR and LTE bands and its marketing page says “5G capability” without using the word RedCap. What a cellular Series 12 lets you do
Apple’s connectivity section for Series 12 lists Apple Pay, GymKit, Apple Watch For Your Kids and international roaming. watchOS 27 adds the change most relevant to cellular buyers: Workout Buddy now works without a nearby iPhone over Wi-Fi or cellular, and adds Spanish.
- Calls, messages, music and maps on the wrist with the iPhone left at home, over 5G or LTE.
- Apple Watch For Your Kids, which watchOS 27 says can now be set up without an iPhone, for a child’s own cellular watch.
- International roaming on the bands Apple lists, subject to carrier support.
- GymKit connections to compatible gym equipment.
What Apple has not said
- The price of the cellular Series 12 in any material. Apple’s Store page shows only “From $399”.
- Data speeds for RedCap on the watch, or which US and international carriers support RedCap today.
- Whether a RedCap connection uses more or less battery than LTE on the same watch.
- Whether the cellular radio adds weight. Apple’s spec page lists separate GPS and cellular weights, but the figures as published need checking before we quote them.
- Why Ultra 4’s spec page drops the RedCap wording that Ultra 3 and Series 12 use.
