Apple Watch Series 8 is not on Apple’s watchOS 27 compatibility list, which starts at Series 9, so the 2022 watch stops at watchOS 26 while Series 12 launches with the new software, an S11 chip, a 2000-nit display, new heart sensors and a 24-hour battery rating. The starting price is unchanged at $399, the same figure Apple’s press release gave for Series 8 four years ago.
Apple’s watchOS page lists the supported models as Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9 and later, and Ultra 2 and later, with an iPhone 11 or later on iOS 27. Series 8 owners therefore miss Siri AI on the wrist, the dynamic app grid and every other feature in our Series 12 announcement coverage unless they buy new hardware.

What ending at watchOS 26 means for a Series 8
Apple’s September 2025 press releases said watchOS 26 covered Series 6 or later, and that is where Series 8 stops. Everything in watchOS 27 skips it: Siri AI with personal context in beta, the dedicated Siri app, the dynamic app grid, the single-handed tap gesture for the Smart Stack, the Siri Modular watch face, Workout Buddy without a nearby iPhone and in Spanish, perimenopause and menopause notifications in Cycle Tracking, and the redesigned Find My app.

Apple has not said how long Series 8 will keep receiving security updates on watchOS 26, or whether any watchOS 27 feature will be back-ported. The watch keeps working with an iPhone on iOS 27; it simply stays on the older watch software.
Chip, display and sensors: what four years bought
Apple Support lists the S8 as a 64-bit dual-core system-in-package. Apple’s Series 12 specs list the S11 with a 4-core Neural Engine, 64GB of storage and a Secure Exclave for on-device audio processing, the basis for Audio Intelligence: Sound Recognition alerts, Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Shazam. Apple’s Series 12 page says Sound Recognition arrives late 2026.
The display doubles in peak brightness, from up to 1000 nits on Series 8 to 2000 nits on Series 12, with a 1 nit minimum and LTPO3 refresh down to 1 Hz. Series 8 introduced the temperature sensor that Series 12 still carries, and both offer ECG and Blood Oxygen. Series 12 adds the depth gauge to 6 meters and water temperature sensor, plus the new optical and electrical heart sensors that Apple’s press release says read heart rate every five seconds and HRV every five minutes. Those readings feed the Readiness app, a daily 0 to 10 score with four recommendations.
Battery and charging: 18 to 24 hours, 45 to 30 minutes
Apple Support rates Series 8 at up to 18 hours and gives no Low Power Mode figure. Apple’s compare page put its charge to 80 percent at about 45 minutes. Series 12 is rated at up to 24 hours, 38 hours in Low Power Mode and 10 hours of outdoor workout, reaches 80 percent in about 30 minutes, and gets up to 12 hours from a 15-minute charge, according to Apple’s tech specs.
Sizes, materials and bands
Series 8 came in 41 mm and 45 mm aluminum or stainless steel. Series 12 uses 42 mm and 46 mm cases in aluminum or titanium, and adds ceramic in Pearl White and Night Blue at 43 mm and 47 mm. Aluminum models get Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than Ion-X glass, and the case is 100 percent recycled aluminum or titanium. Apple’s press release lists new Sport Band, Sport Loop, Milanese Loop and Modern Buckle options but no band prices.

- Titanium, ceramic, cellular and band prices for Series 12.
- Low Power Mode hours for Series 8, which Apple’s pages never stated.
Series 12 is on pre-order now from $399 and reaches stores on Friday, September 18, according to Apple’s press release; watchOS 27 ships as a free update on Monday, September 14. If $399 is too much, Apple still sells the Apple Watch SE 3 from $249, and it is on the watchOS 27 list.
