Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 both list a sleep score and sleep apnea notifications, and both add an overnight vitals view that compares Recovery HRV with your personal baseline. What is easy to miss is where those changes live: Apple’s own watchOS 27 feature list does not name a single sleep feature.
Every confirmed sleep change this year comes from the hardware in the two new watches and from the redesigned Health app on iPhone. If you were expecting Monday’s free update to change how an existing Apple Watch tracks sleep, Apple has published nothing that says it will.
| Key fact | What Apple publishes |
|---|---|
| Sleep score | Listed for Series 12 and Ultra 4 |
| Sleep apnea notifications | Listed for Series 12 and Ultra 4 |
| Overnight vitals | Compare Recovery HRV with your personal baseline |
| Readiness | Sleep is one of four named inputs |
| watchOS 27 feature list | No sleep feature named |
| Five-minute charge | Up to 10 hours of sleep tracking on both watches |
| How the sleep score is calculated | Not published |
What the two new watches list for sleep
Apple’s marketing pages for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 carry the same set: a sleep score, sleep apnea notifications, hypertension notifications, the ECG app and the new Readiness app, all sitting under the Health Sensing System.

The sensing behind them is the change. Heart rate is read every five seconds and HRV as often as every five minutes, which Apple describes as 60 times and 24 times more frequent than the previous generation. Overnight, that feeds the vitals comparison against your own baseline.
watchOS 27’s own feature list has no sleep entry
Apple’s watchOS 27 page lists Siri AI and a Siri app, a dynamic app grid, a single-handed tap gesture for the Smart Stack, Smart Stack widget suggestions, Workout Buddy running without a nearby iPhone, improved treadmill and indoor walk distance accuracy, perimenopause and menopause notifications in Cycle Tracking, a consolidated Find My, Liquid Glass, Call Context, faster Music playback, step counts syncing to Health, Wallet passes and child accounts.
Sleep is not on that list. That is not a criticism of the update, and it does not mean nothing changed for sleep. It means the changes are tied to the new sensors and the new Health app rather than to the software update itself.
Where each sleep change actually comes from
| Sleep capability | Where it comes from | What Apple published |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep score | Series 12 and Ultra 4 feature lists | Named for both watches, with no formula |
| Sleep apnea notifications | Series 12 and Ultra 4 feature lists | Named for both watches |
| Overnight vitals with Recovery HRV | Health Sensing System | Compared against a personal baseline |
| Sleep as a Readiness input | Readiness app | One of four inputs, weighting not published |
| Sleep in the Longevity tab | Health app on iPhone | One of seven long-term categories |
| Sleep in Health Age | Health app on iPhone | Used with VO2 max, resting heart rate and HRV, and it requires an Apple Watch |
| Sleep summaries in Insights | Health app on iPhone | Real-time summaries across heart, sleep, readiness, fitness, vitals and cycle tracking |
The Health app side carries its own conditions. Apple says the redesigned app launches in US English first with more languages later, runs on Apple Intelligence devices, and gates some features to users 18 and over.
Sleep is one of four Readiness inputs
For anyone training, the practical consequence of the new sleep data is the daily Readiness score. Apple names sleep as one of four inputs behind it, with recent activity, training load and vitals, and the score runs from 0 to 10 with four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready and Go For It.
Apple has not published how heavily sleep counts inside that score, or what Readiness shows after a night the watch was not worn. A score with an input missing is the situation Apple describes least.
The charging figure Apple rates for sleep
Sleep tracking only happens if the watch is on your wrist overnight, and Apple publishes one figure aimed squarely at that. Five minutes on the charger is rated for up to 10 hours of sleep tracking on both Series 12 and Ultra 4.
- Apple Watch Series 12: up to 24 hours of normal use, 38 hours in Low Power Mode, 80 percent in about 30 minutes.
- Apple Watch Ultra 4: up to 50 hours of normal use, 84 hours in Low Power Mode, 80 percent in about 45 minutes.
- Both are Apple’s ratings, not measured results, and Apple has not published the conditions behind them.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published how the sleep score is calculated, what range it uses, how many nights it needs before it settles, or how sleep is weighted inside Readiness. It has also not published which sleep stages or metrics feed the score.
Nor has it said whether the sleep score, sleep apnea notifications or overnight vitals appear on Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3 or SE 3 under watchOS 27. Apple lists all three under the new watches, and the older models are supported by the update without a feature-by-feature statement. None of these figures is a medical assessment, and Apple presents the Vitals app as wellness rather than medical use.
watchOS 27 and iOS 27 arrive free on Monday, September 14. Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach stores on Friday, September 18, after pre-orders that opened on September 9, as covered in our event recap.
