Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Apple Watch Series 11: Last Year’s $399 Watch or the New $799 One

Apple Watch Ultra 4 costs $799 and Apple Watch Series 11 launched at $399 a year ago, so the question is whether the S11 chip, 50-hour battery, 100 m water resistance and satellite messaging are worth $400 over last year’s mainstream watch. They are if you hike, dive, run long distances or hate charging; if you mostly want health tracking, the bigger problem for Series 11 is that Series 12 now has the new sensors at the same $399.

The figures below come from Apple’s compare page, Apple’s Ultra 4 tech specs and Apple’s September 2025 press release for Series 11. Apple has not published a current Series 11 price on its Store page, which lists “From” prices only for SE 3, Series 12 and Ultra 4.

What the extra $400 buys

The biggest gap is the chip and the sensors attached to it. Apple’s Ultra 4 page says the watch takes background heart rate readings 60 times more often than Ultra 3 and HRV readings 24 times more often, which Apple describes as heart rate every five seconds and HRV as often as every five minutes. Series 11 has the S10 and the previous sensor generation, so it cannot match that and does not get the Readiness app, Live Rewind or Siri Recap, all of which Apple ties to the S11.

Battery is the second gap. Apple rates Ultra 4 at 50 hours of normal use against 24 for Series 11, 84 hours in Low Power Mode against 38, and gives Ultra 4 three workout ratings Series 11 does not have: 18 hours outdoor, 25 hours in Extended workout mode and 45 hours in the new Max Extended mode with one-second GPS intervals. A 15-minute charge gives Ultra 4 up to 18 hours.

Then there is the outdoor kit: a 3000-nit flat sapphire display, 100 m water resistance under ISO 22810:2010 with EN13319 certification for recreational scuba to 40 m, a depth gauge accurate to plus or minus 1 m, precision dual-frequency GPS, MIL-STD 810H testing, and Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My via satellite, with two years of satellite service included. Series 11 has 50 m water resistance, precision L1 GPS and no satellite.

What Series 11 does just as well

Series 11 is not a stripped-down watch. Apple’s compare page lists the same core health features on both: hypertension notifications, sleep score, the ECG app, Blood Oxygen, a temperature sensor and 5G on cellular models. Both have 64GB of storage, Wi-Fi 4, Bluetooth 5.3 and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.

Series 11 also charges to 80 percent in about 30 minutes, 15 minutes faster than Ultra 4, and comes in two sizes and two materials rather than one 49 mm titanium case. For a smaller wrist, that matters more than any spec sheet.

Both run watchOS 27 on September 14, including Siri AI in English, the dynamic app grid, the tap gesture for the Smart Stack and Workout Buddy without a nearby iPhone.

The Series 12 problem

The honest comparison for a bargain hunter is a three-way one. Series 12 starts at $399, the same as Series 11 did, and it has the S11 chip, the five-second heart rate readings, the Readiness app and Ceramic Shield 2 on aluminum models, which Apple calls 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass on aluminum Series 11.

That means Series 11 only makes sense if it is priced well below $399, and Apple has not published such a price. At $399, Series 12 gets you most of what makes Ultra 4 new; the $400 you save over Ultra 4 buys you a smaller case and gives up the battery, the display brightness, the dive rating and satellite.

Who should buy which

  • Buy Ultra 4 if you want two days between charges, a watch that survives scuba and high-speed water sports, or satellite messaging away from cellular coverage.
  • Buy Series 12 if you want the new Health Sensing System and Readiness at $399.
  • Buy Series 11 only at a clear discount, and only if you do not care about the new sensors. It keeps ECG, Blood Oxygen, sleep score and 24-hour battery.

What Apple has not said

  • Whether Series 11 is still sold by Apple, and at what price.
  • Series 11 weight, dimensions and outdoor workout hours; Apple’s Series 12 page only describes the new 10-hour outdoor rating as 25 percent more than before.
  • Ultra 4 prices beyond the $799 start, and Series 11 titanium or cellular prices.
  • Display sizes in inches for either watch.

Ultra 4 is on pre-order now and in stores Friday, September 18. For the rest of the lineup, see our event recap.
