Apple’s base iPhone 18 is expected to launch in spring 2027, following a major change to the company’s annual iPhone release schedule. Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, but the standard model was noticeably absent from the announcement.
Multiple supply chain reports suggest Apple is targeting March or April 2027 for the regular iPhone 18, potentially alongside the iPhone 18e and second-generation iPhone Air. However, Apple has yet to announce an official release date or confirm when the device will become available.
When Will the Base iPhone 18 Be Released?
The most likely release window for the standard iPhone 18 is March 2027, although an April launch remains possible. The expected timing would place its arrival approximately six months after the iPhone 18 Pro launched in September 2026.

Apple’s revised launch strategy first emerged in reports from The Information and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in May 2025. The reports suggested Apple would separate its premium and standard iPhone releases into two annual launch windows.
A January 2026 Reuters report, citing Nikkei Asia, provided further evidence of the change. An executive at an iPhone supplier explained:
“Supply chain smoothness is one of the key challenges for this year.”
The release timeline gained additional support in August when Apple manufacturing partner Pegatron reportedly indicated that a major customer was changing its usual smartphone shipment schedule.
Apple subsequently unveiled its premium iPhone lineup on September 9 without announcing the standard iPhone 18, further supporting expectations of a separate spring launch.
Why Is Apple Releasing the iPhone 18 in 2027?
Apple’s decision to separate the standard iPhone from its Pro models appears connected to manufacturing costs, supply chain capacity, and the growing number of devices in its lineup.
According to an August 2026 report from Counterpoint Research, display panel shipments for Apple’s premium models began in July, while production of panels for the standard models had yet to begin.
The research firm explained:
“By prioritizing premium devices, Apple can focus its initial production capacity on higher-margin models that are better positioned to absorb increased bill-of-material costs.”
The staggered schedule also gives Apple more flexibility to manage production as demand for memory chips and other components increases.
Meanwhile, introducing standard iPhones during the first half of the year gives Apple another major product launch window and allows it to compete more directly with Android manufacturers releasing flagship devices during that period.
Base iPhone 18 Expected Specifications
Although Apple has not confirmed the iPhone 18’s specifications, several reports suggest the standard model will receive meaningful hardware upgrades while retaining a familiar design.
Here are the currently rumored specifications:
| Feature | Expected specification |
|---|---|
| Release date | March or April 2027 |
| Processor | A20 chip, reportedly using a 2nm process |
| Display | 6.3-inch OLED with ProMotion |
| RAM | 9GB or 12GB |
| Design | Similar to iPhone 17 |
| Dynamic Island | Potentially smaller |
| Connectivity | Apple C2 cellular modem |
| Software | iOS 27 |
The A20 processor is expected to improve performance and power efficiency compared with the A19 chip found in the iPhone 17.
Memory capacity remains uncertain, with Ming-Chi Kuo predicting 9GB of RAM while analyst Jeff Pu expects 12GB. Additional memory would help support more demanding on-device Apple Intelligence features.
Should You Wait for the iPhone 18?
If you already own an iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 and your device works well, waiting until spring 2027 would give you an opportunity to compare the standard iPhone 18’s hardware upgrades, battery performance, and pricing before upgrading.
However, buyers who need a new iPhone immediately can consider the existing iPhone 17 or the recently released Pro models.
For now, March 2027 remains the strongest prediction for the base iPhone 18 release date, with Apple expected to provide official availability and pricing details closer to its announcement.
