Apple has officially introduced touchscreen technology to the MacBook lineup, raising questions about when the MacBook Air will receive the same upgrade. The company unveiled its first touchscreen MacBook Pro on October 28, 2026, but has yet to confirm whether the feature will reach its thinner and more affordable MacBook Air.
Earlier reports suggest Apple is preparing a major display upgrade for the MacBook Air around 2028 or 2029. However, touchscreen support remains uncertain, even as the company begins bringing touch controls to macOS.
Will Apple Release a Touchscreen MacBook Air?
Apple has not announced a touchscreen MacBook Air or confirmed that one is in development. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in March 2026 that Apple had yet to decide whether touchscreen technology would expand beyond the MacBook Pro.

According to Gurman:
“At this point, Apple hasn’t decided whether to bring touch to any Macs beyond the MacBook Pro.”
That leaves the MacBook Air’s future uncertain, although Apple’s recent hardware changes suggest it now has the software and display technology needed to expand touchscreen support across additional Macs.
The company introduced its first touchscreen MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED display, M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, and a redesigned chassis. The premium models start at $2,899 and become available on November 6, 2026.
Touchscreen MacBook Air Release Date: When Could It Arrive?
The earliest realistic window for a touchscreen MacBook Air appears to be 2028, although Apple has not committed to that timeline.
Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously predicted that the MacBook Air would adopt OLED displays around 2028 or 2029. Bloomberg has also reported that Apple is working toward a similar schedule.
However, these predictions concern OLED display technology specifically, and an OLED MacBook Air would not automatically include touchscreen capabilities.
Apple could introduce touch alongside the OLED upgrade or reserve the feature for its more expensive MacBook Pro models until production costs decline.
Expected Display and Touchscreen Features

The upcoming OLED MacBook Air is expected to replace the LCD technology found in existing models, bringing improvements in contrast, color reproduction and power efficiency.
If Apple includes touch support, the device could offer several capabilities already available on the latest MacBook Pro:
- Multi-touch gestures: Pinch to zoom, swipe through content and scroll directly on the display.
- Touch-based window management: Move, resize and arrange windows using your fingers.
- Direct app interaction: Edit photos, navigate documents and interact with creative applications.
- macOS integration: Use touch alongside traditional keyboard shortcuts and trackpad gestures.
Apple has already optimized macOS 27 for touch input, including automatic translation of screen touches into mouse clicks and new gesture APIs for developers.
As Apple explains in its official announcement:
“Touch also introduces entirely new ways of working for pro users.”
These software changes could make future touchscreen MacBook Air models easier to introduce without requiring Apple to redesign macOS again.
Expected Specs and Pricing
Apple has not disclosed specifications for a touchscreen MacBook Air, and existing reports provide little information about its possible hardware configuration.
| Feature | Current expectation |
|---|---|
| Release date | 2028 or later, speculative |
| Display | OLED expected around 2028–2029 |
| Touchscreen | Unconfirmed |
| Screen sizes | 13-inch and 15-inch models possible |
| Processor | Unannounced future Apple silicon |
| Operating system | Future version of macOS |
| Price | Not announced |
Adding touchscreen technology could increase manufacturing costs, particularly if Apple combines it with OLED panels. However, there is currently no reliable pricing estimate for such a model.
Should You Wait for a Touchscreen MacBook Air?
If touchscreen functionality is essential, waiting for a MacBook Air carries considerable uncertainty because Apple has not confirmed the feature or provided a release schedule.
The newly announced touchscreen MacBook Pro offers a confirmed alternative, although its $2,899 starting price places it well above the MacBook Air.
For buyers who primarily need a lightweight laptop for browsing, productivity, coding and everyday work, the existing MacBook Air remains a practical choice.
Apple’s planned OLED transition gives the MacBook Air a significant display upgrade to look forward to, while the company’s decision about touchscreen support remains one of the biggest unanswered questions about its future laptops.
