The iPhone 17 Pro is still a very good phone, and you cannot buy one from Apple. It was discontinued on September 9, and Apple’s Certified Refurbished store had no iPhone 17 generation device listed as of September 10, with no published schedule for when one appears.
So the real question is not which phone to pick in an Apple Store. It is whether a used or carrier-stock iPhone 17 Pro, bought at whatever a seller is asking, beats a new iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199 with a full warranty. The specification gap is narrower than a year usually buys, which cuts both ways.

What the extra money actually buys
Four things, and they are real. The A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2nm iPhone chip, with a GPU Apple rates up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro, double the AI processing and 50 percent more memory bandwidth. The variable aperture adds four stops plus manual aperture and shutter control. Battery goes from 33 to 36 hours of video playback. And there is a 2TB tier for the first time.
What does not change is just as important when you are weighing a discount. Same screen size and resolution, same 18MP front camera, same 8x optical-quality telephoto and 16x zoom range, same aluminium unibody with Ceramic Shield 2. A 17 Pro does not feel like an old phone next to an 18 Pro, and iOS 27 runs on every iPhone back to the iPhone 11, so software support is not a near-term worry.
Where a 17 Pro can still be found, and what it should cost

On the carrier route, the last-generation deals are still live. AT&T’s own deals page leads with iPhone 17 Pro Max at up to $1,100 off with an eligible trade-in valued at $290 or more and an eligible plan, and Best Buy’s listing offers up to $1,100 off iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max with a qualified AT&T activation and trade-in, or up to $830 with a qualified Verizon myPlan activation and trade-in.
Those are not price cuts. They are monthly bill credits spread across 24 to 36 months, tied to a plan, and the remaining credits stop if you leave.
For a private sale, Apple gives you the only published anchor: Apple Trade In credits up to $785 for an iPhone 17 Pro and up to $885 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and both are upper bounds for a device in good condition. If a seller is asking more than Apple will pay for the same phone, you are buying at retail with none of the retail protection.
The false economy test
- Is the saving bigger than a couple of hundred dollars? Under that, a new phone with a warranty, three more hours of video playback and faster charging is the better use of the money.
- Does the offer depend on staying put? A carrier credit over 36 months is only worth its headline if you keep that plan for three years.
- Is the condition verified? Apple’s own trade-in values fall for cracked screens, swollen batteries and failed diagnostics, and a private seller need not disclose any of it.
- Do you need AppleCare? Apple has not published per-device AppleCare+ prices for its 2026 products, so treat coverage as an unknown cost.
What has not been confirmed
- Apple has published no date or schedule for iPhone 17 generation stock appearing in Certified Refurbished.
- There is no first-party published resale price for iPhone 17 Pro. Apple’s trade-in figures are the closest proxy.
- AppleCare+ prices for the September 2026 lineup are not published on Apple’s pages.
- Verizon has published no iPhone 18 Pro offer, AT&T’s own site carries none either, and T-Mobile’s terms could not be verified on its site.
If the answer lands on the new phone, the dates are set: iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT and it ships on Friday, September 18, with Apple crediting $175 to $885 instantly for an iPhone 13 or later traded in at the same time. If it lands on a used iPhone 17 Pro, check the refurbished storefront on the day you buy, because that is the only route that comes with a fresh Apple warranty.
