The Cheapest Way to Buy iPhone Duo: Every Route Apple Publishes, Ranked in Dollars

iPhone Duo costs $1,999 for 256GB and $3,199 for 2TB, and only three published routes take money off those numbers: Apple Trade In, the Veterans and Military Purchase Program, and Daily Cash on an Apple Card. Everything else Apple offers changes when you pay rather than how much you pay.

That is a harder buying picture than the one facing iPhone 18 Pro buyers. No carrier has published an iPhone Duo offer, Apple’s Education Store does not discount iPhone at all, and Apple Certified Refurbished has no fold and no published schedule for when models appear.

Every route to a lower price, ranked in dollars

The table below is our arithmetic on Apple’s published figures, applied to the $1,999 model. The percentages and the credit range are Apple’s. The dollar results are ours.

RouteOff $1,999The catch
Apple Trade In, best caseUp to $885Needs an iPhone 17 Pro Max in good condition
Apple Trade In, recent Pro$370 to $510The values recorded for an iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro, both subject to inspection
Veterans and Military, 10 percent$199.90Installments and the Apple Upgrade lease are not offered in that storefront
No sales tax where you buy$159.92 at an 8 percent rateOnly where you buy and take delivery, and Alaska and Montana allow local taxes
Apple Card Daily Cash, 3 percent$59.97Needs an Apple Card, and installments require a postpaid AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon plan
0 percent installments or the lease$0Timing only, and a lease is not ownership

Apple has not published rules on which of these combine, so read the rows as separate levers rather than a running total. The one pairing Apple’s pages do describe, a trade-in credit at checkout on a purchase paid with an Apple Card, comes to $944.97 before tax at the top of the range.

Trade-in is the biggest lever and the least certain

Apple’s own wording is a range, not a price. Customers trading in an iPhone 13 or later can get $175 to $885 in credit instantly. Apple’s Trade In page publishes no per-model table: it asks condition questions and produces an estimate, and Apple’s footnote says values vary by condition, year and configuration.

The $885 ceiling belongs to an iPhone 17 Pro Max in good condition and the $175 floor to an iPhone 13. The values recorded for individual models were all cut on September 9, some by as much as $120, so this is one launch where waiting cost owners money.

Duo buyers trade in five weeks later again, in the week of October 16. Apple publishes no schedule for when it changes trade-in values, so the estimate on screen today is not a promise about October.

The 10 percent that costs you the financing

Apple’s Veterans and Military Purchase Program takes 10 percent off for current and former members of the US Military, National Guard and Reserve, plus immediate family in the same household, verified through ID.me. That is $199.90 on a $1,999 iPhone Duo, and it is the only across-the-board discount Apple applies to an iPhone.

The catch is in Apple’s own terms. Apple Card Monthly Installments are not available as a payment type in that storefront, and neither is the Apple Upgrade lease. The choice is 10 percent off or 0 percent financing, not both.

Paying monthly is not paying less

Apple’s $83.29 a month across 24 months comes to $1,998.96, four cents under list, which is what a 0 percent plan looks like written out. It changes your cash flow and takes nothing off the phone.

Apple Upgrade, the lease that replaced the iPhone Upgrade Program in July, starts at $57.99 a month over 24 months for iPhone Duo. The monthly figure is lower because you do not own the phone at the end, AppleCare is not included, and the device has to go back in good condition.

The routes that do not exist for iPhone Duo

  • Carrier credits. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro footnotes carry up to $1,200 in credits. The iPhone Duo release does not extend that figure to the fold, and no US carrier has published Duo terms.
  • Education pricing. Apple’s Education Store lists iPhone at exactly the same prices as the consumer store.
  • Certified Refurbished. The newest refurbished iPhone Apple listed this week is an iPhone 16, and Apple publishes no timetable for when a model joins that store.
  • The $30 connectivity discount. Apple names it on iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 only, not on anything launched in September.
  • Retailers. The one confirmed launch promotion is Best Buy’s, and it is for Apple Watch Series 12: up to $325 off with an eligible Watch trade-in, expiring 9/18/2026.

Apple does include three months of Apple One, which is a trial rather than a discount. Our iPhone Duo against iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison is the other half of this decision, because the $700 gap between them is not something a credit will close.

What has not been confirmed

Apple has not published an AppleCare+ price for iPhone Duo, any repair pricing for the folding display or the hinge, a business discount, or the buyout figure at the end of an Apple Upgrade lease. The fold does not ship for six weeks, so any Duo carrier number circulating now is a quote rather than an announced offer.

Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT and iPhone Duo ships Friday, October 23. If a trade-in is part of the plan, run the estimate again that week rather than trusting today’s figure, and read our full iPhone Duo price and specifications and the event recap before you settle on a tier.
