Apple sells two iPhone Duo cases, a $79 iPhone Duo Case and a $129 iPhone Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand, and the honest first answer is that neither is required. The real decision is whether you want to add bulk to a phone that already weighs 254 g and measures about 11.3 mm thick when closed.
This is a purchase decision rather than a durability verdict. What Apple has published about the hinge, the titanium frame and the IP68 rating is a separate argument, and it sits alongside the rest of the announcement in our event recap. The point here is what the $79 and the $129 actually add, and what Apple has left unstated.

The numbers a case has to work with
iPhone Duo weighs 254 g. Closed it measures 3.31 by 4.64 by 0.44 inches, roughly 11.3 mm thick. Open it is 0.21 inches, about 5.2 mm. For comparison, iPhone 18 Pro Max is 249 g and 8.75 mm thick.

So the Duo already weighs more than the heaviest non-folding iPhone and is close to a third thicker when shut. Every gram and every millimetre a case adds lands on a device that is already at the far end of both scales, which is not true of a case on an iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple has not published a weight or a thickness for either accessory, so nobody can tell you exactly what the penalty is. What is certain is that it is additive, and that it is felt sooner here than on any other iPhone.
What the extra $50 buys on the Folio
The one functional difference Apple has published is the kickstand built into the Folio. That is not decoration on this phone, because iOS 27 on iPhone Duo responds to how the device is posed, with an upgraded StandBy and layouts that change between open, closed, seated and standing positions.
If you use the phone propped up, for video, for a Split View layout on the 7.6-inch inner display, or as a desk clock, the Folio is buying a function rather than a colour. If you do not, the $50 gap buys a different set of colours and a different form of protection.
Apple has published sand and navy blue for the Case and navy blue and taupe for the Folio. It has not published a materials breakdown for either, so there is no published answer on finish, lining or how each ages.
Whether a case gets in the way of the fold
This is the question with no published answer, and it is the one that should decide the purchase. Apple has not stated how either accessory attaches, whether either covers the inner display when the phone is open, or whether either passes MagSafe charging through, even though iPhone Duo itself supports MagSafe at up to 25W.
A two-part case has to clear a hinge Apple says contains more than 100 components, and a folio has to close over a display without pressing on it. Both are solvable, and Apple has evidently solved them to its own satisfaction, but neither is described in anything published so far. If you can, handle both in a store rather than adding one to a pre-order for a phone you have never held.
The strongest argument for buying one
It is not toughness. It is that Apple has published no repair price for the iPhone Duo screen or hinge, and no out-of-warranty repair pricing for any product launched in September 2026. Protecting a part with no published replacement cost is a different calculation from protecting a part you can price.

The two are not substitutes. A case does nothing about theft, and a coverage plan does nothing about a scuffed titanium edge, so the sensible question is not which one but whether either is worth it to you.
