iOS 27 on an iPhone 11: What Apple’s Oldest Supported iPhone Actually Gets

iOS 27 arrives on Monday, September 14 as a free update, and Apple’s compatibility list still runs all the way back to the iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE second generation. An iPhone 11 gets the new Liquid Glass look, Apple’s speed work, the rebuilt search and the new parental controls. It gets none of Apple Intelligence.

That is the whole shape of the update on a 2019 phone. Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 16 or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, so roughly two thirds of the models on Apple’s iOS 27 device list are getting a version of iOS 27 with the assistant switched off.

Apple measured its headline speed claim on an iPhone 11

The most quoted iOS 27 number is that app launches are up to 30 percent faster. Apple’s own footnote says that was tested on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, comparing iOS 26.4.2 with prerelease iOS 27, in April and May 2026.

The other two claims were measured elsewhere, and the difference matters if you are trying to work out what your own phone will feel like.

Apple also lists an optimized CPU scheduler, smoother switching between Wi-Fi and cellular, and rebuilt search in Spotlight, Photos and Mail. It attaches no figures to those.

What an iPhone 11 actually gets

  • Liquid Glass with more uniform refraction and improved contrast, plus a new Settings slider that runs from ultraclear to fully tinted, and sharper app icons
  • Mail search with a new ranking system that pushes the most relevant results into Top Hits
  • Messages with faster sync, better missed-message notifications and unread counts, and Communication Safety that now intervenes before children see gore or violence as well as nudity
  • The Screen Time overhaul: Ask to Browse, Time Allowances across Entertainment, Games and Social Media, schedules and Setup Assistant app choices, all of which Apple says arrive after installing the Screen Time update in iOS 27
  • Wallet passes made by scanning physical loyalty and membership cards, enhanced hotel keys, and an Apple Pay checkout you can swipe to switch cards
  • iCloud Shared Albums with full-resolution sharing and web access for friends on Android or Windows
  • Find My sharing with custom durations, Music lyrics translation and pronunciation pairings, AirPods Custom EQ, and GymKit on iPhone for compatible treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and stair-steppers
  • Cycle Tracking in Health with perimenopause and menopause support

What it does not get, and the one gate people miss

Everything Apple files under Apple Intelligence is off: Siri AI, Image Playground, Genmoji, Clean Up, Spatial Reframing, the Extend tool, Call Context, Mail and Messages Suggestions, Visual Intelligence and the new Siri mode in Camera, Wallet bill splitting, and the Home app’s activity summaries and clip search.

Two smaller gates catch iPhone 11 owners specifically. Tap to Share in Apple Pay requires an iPhone 12 or later on iOS 27, so the iPhone 11 misses it by one generation. Live Translation with AirPods requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Apple also lists Safari tab grouping inside the Apple Intelligence section of its iPhone 18 Pro page, and it has published no per-feature device table, so that one is unresolved rather than promised.

It still pairs with the newest Apple Watch

watchOS 27 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE second generation or later, running iOS 27. Apple Watch Series 12 lists the same requirement on its specifications page, so a 2019 iPhone is enough to set up the watch Apple announced last week.

The catch is the same one. Watch Audio Intelligence, which covers Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Sound Recognition, needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone, and Apple says it arrives in beta late in 2026 rather than on Monday. The same goes for the hands-free Siri AI features on AirPods 5.

What Apple has not said

Apple has published a date for iOS 27 and almost nothing else about the mechanics. There is no release time, no download size, no free-space requirement and no statement that the rollout is staged by region or in waves.

There is also no support library behind it yet. Apple’s general “Update your iPhone or iPad” document was last updated on December 5, 2025 and does not mention iOS 27 at all, no “About iOS 27 Updates” page exists, and Apple’s security releases index still stops at iOS 26.6.2 from September 8. Nothing has been published about how the update behaves on older hardware beyond that single 30 percent claim.

iOS 27 is free from Monday, September 14. If you are running an iPhone 11 or an iPhone SE second generation, the honest expectation is a redesign, faster search and new parental controls, and a Settings screen where Apple Intelligence never appears. Our event recap covers what Apple announced alongside it.
